The injectors look fine and are all a uniform color and there's no vacuum leaks. I've thought about the fuel pressure regulator before but was unsure of how to check it without buying the Toyota special service tool. I'll buy a few fittings tomorrow and check the fuel pressure to see if it could be the regulator.

I doubt it's anything wrong with the engine because I just replaced the whole engine and the last one made the same exact sound. So I'm looking more towards a fuel, ignition or sensor problem.

Thanks guys!

I'm right there with you. I have bad idle that's getting worse; bad smell; engine rocks bad; exhaust leak.
I've chased demons all over - EGR seems fine, timing is right, tried to adjust TPS, but not sure it's right, New injectors, new fuel pump and filter, new coil. I'm about to give up as well.

I found this YotaTech thread "Knock Sensor CEL 86 SR5 22RE" which lead me to this LCEngineering Tech Notes:

Update - I tried unplugging the knock sensor. I tried removing it and plugging it in and wrapping it in a sweat shirt and got Error 52. I tried relocating the knock sensor as described in LCEngineering tech notes, and there doesn't appear to be a change in the running condition of my engine. I was hoping there for a little bit.

Now I am wondering if I have a really have a bad knock. I bought a remanufactured engine from a company I found on the web.

Squeebs - Been up to Hungry Valley much? I can't get the bugs worked out enough to even think about a decent trail run. I hope to soon though.

Bakersfield does not extend to the bottom of the hill. Grapevine is at the bottom of the hill... on your side... and Bakersfield is MANY miles North up the 99.

And we in California* consider the "Grapevine" from Gorman (more appropriately the I-5/SR-138 interchange) to the I-5/SR-99 interchange (which is a li'l more than a li'l south of Bakersfield, IIRC).

*sorry- I know you are in California too... but...?

Abe's right. But some day Bako will extend that far and by then you will need to wear a space suit and oxygen tank to survive the pollution in the San Jaquin Valley.

Ok, the 4runner still runs really rough and it seems like the world just doesn't want it to get fixed. I dropped it off at a shop last Friday, called today and they haven't even touched it. I was planning on taking it out this weekend so I'll probably pick it up tomorrow.

When I dropped it off at the shop the mechanic said it sounds like it's running on three cylinders. What could cause this? rotting wires to one of the injectors in the harness? ECU? I'm considering if I should just replace the whole wiring harness with a used one. Anyone know where the 8 wires from the injector go to? So that I could just use a my multimeter to see if that's the problem? Thanks

rough 22re

ok... you have checked all of those things, what about your timing chain it could be a little streched throwing off syncronization, because i will tell you that motor aint running right at all, i thing it has somthing to do with your timing chain systems.

Aside from the smell of gasoline, it sounds like a fuel delivery problem (crimped fuel hard line, ailing fuel pump, bad filter, etc).

I think I may have figured it out, well in theory anyways. While researching on 4x4wire.com I learned that on the early 22re's Toyota used butt connectors for the fuel injectors, which have a tendency to fail. When I pick my 4runner up tomorrow I'll solder the wires and see if that fixes my problem. Wish me luck, or else it looks like I'll be towing a side by side on three cylinders this weekend...

Yeah the timing chain and guides are fine. Small update though, the misfire is from cylinder 2 not getting any fuel. It definitely has spark, but i pulled the plug off the injectors and hook it up to an extra, heard clicking for the injectors on cylinders 1, 3, 4 but not 2. Any ideas? harness?

possibly a wiring issue.
as mentioned elsewhere you should have 12v (battery voltage) at each terminal on the injector plug... so... do you?

use your mm, check the terminals on each injector/clip, ill bet you dont hear the ""click" because your #2 is almost constant open, hense your "fuel smell" from the exhaust and your flooding, or "wall" at 3k..... it doesnt really sound like a lack of fuel but an overabundance, considering you also said you had poor fuel economy... im just throwing out ideas....
