22RE issues
Hey guys, first post here, hoping someone can help me out. A while back I bought an '85 Celica GT-S with an 86+ 22RE that came out of a truck or 4Runner, and I'm having some issues with the engine. It runs fine for the first minute or two that I'm driving it, sometimes up to 10 minutes, just depends (warmer weather seems to help....). But the check engine light always comes on, and when it does, the whole behavior of the engine changes. It becomes very slow, still drivable, but very slow, and the sound of the engine changes a little, I guess "flat" would be a good way to describe the sound it makes. I will jump the E1 and TE1 terminals tonight, have to go to work first. I'll post what it says when I get home. Just thought I would throw this out there and see if anyone has any ideas in the meantime. It's a pretty fun car to drive around when it's running right.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

I'll throw my 2 cents out there...
Typically, it's a sensor. Duh, right? Depending on the sensor, it will throw the engine into "Limp Home Mode" which results in very poor performance. This allows the engine to still run (almost barely) enough to get you off the highway, home, or to a shop. Mass Air Flow sensor, O2 Sensor, etc.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, PLEASE. I don't have a whole lot of experience and I hate leading people in the wrong direction.

The "limp home mode" sounds exactly what I'm experiencing. When the problem first came up (about a year ago), the check engine light said it was the O2 sensor and I replaced it, but it kept doing the same thing. I have left it alone since then and now I'm anxious to get it running right. Thanks for the response.

Sensors can be a freaking pain in the ass. Ask me how I know? My mom had a 97 Kia Sportage that had a faulty sensor somewhere and constantly did the "I'll run, but I don't want to" crap. Diagnostic tests would show O2 sensor and/or Mass Air Flow sensor. Our best result came from disconnecting the negative battery cable and resetting the computer. It would stay running good for a while, then have issues again. You could easily spend a few hundred dollars replacing "faulty" sensors and have that not be the problem. Speaking from experience. I forget now what actually ended up being the problem (not that it would necessarily be the same) but my dad had it running good... right before they sold it.
