Hey all, big fan of the site. Been having trouble lately with my truck's idle. On cold mornings idle is about 2000-2200rpm, even with cold start injector disconnected, and I know the thermostat isn't stuck open. This leads me to believe the problem is in the air valve beneath the throttle body.

The Haynes manual I have says the air valve can be checked by pinching off one of the coolant lines leading to it on cold start up. This should cause idle speed to drop...yet mine doesn't. Searched and found this thread:

hope that worked. Thread doesn't seem to point out the adjusting screw mentioned, so hopefully someone could point it out for me or offer some advice.

Not for sure, but I think thats normal. The ECU will kick it up, even without the cold start injector....

Link didnt work, but I think I know what screw you are talking about. Wait until the engine is warm, then adjust.

Toyota used several different approaches for increasing cold idle operation for 22re's. 83-85 had an external version. 86-? had a version that was incorporated in the throttle body and early 90's-95 used yet another version. 83-early 90's are completely adjustable. Early 90's-95 are not from what I've read. Somebody else may be able to chime in here.

 

Cold idle surely shouldn't be above 2000rpms i hope, it definitely makes my mileage suffer. Sorry for the broken link, just cut n paste into address box to see the thread - thanks again for the replies.

 

I have no idea on the 22re. Never had one. But welcome to the site!

 

My 89 goes to around 2200 when it is cold. It slowly drops and when it is warm it is at around 800rpm. This is normal I would think. Remember it is a 4 banger not a V8. When it is really cold, like -20, It idles at about 1200 and slowly runs up to 2200 then starts coming back down.
