Question 22re head with shim???

I rebuilt my 22re engine and when I pulled the head I found a head gasket and a shim... I have never seen this before. I contenued to rebuild the engine and put it back in my truck. everything was new but the block and head. I had the block honed and bored and cleaned, and the head completely redone. After I finished installing the engine I drove it around for about 500 miles and fixed some kinks. a little later i found out that the head gasket was blown or the head had a crack. I removed my head and took it to a machine shop to get it pressure tested and they messured it and said it was over 30 thousandths smaller then the minimum size. due to having it surfaced too many times or something like that. Do I need a new head? Now I am debating getting a new head. Want something strong and good proformance, any ideas?

You are going spend a dollar to save a dime. Your junk has been worked to the max. Salvage what you put into it and compare a short block or long block in terms of cost. Or a salvaged engine to buy time to save up money.

happens too bad.
