any one ever wonder why no one makes a DOHC head for the 22 series engines? i mean i dunno maybe that would make the difference. you could fix the swirl induction that just helps with EPA crap anyway and im sure if it came down to a valve timing thing it could be set up properly with timing gears and the right chain. probably have to fabricate a timing cover or atleast the top portion of it but to me it seems do-able. people have done wierder things.... from what ive read the older celica motors are nothing but a 22r style motor with DOHC and variable timing.

Older celicas had the 22r engine. There are no dohc heads available. Go with the 2.7 from the newer tacomas if you want dohc

which older celica engines? the inline 6's: 5/6/7mg(t)e?
18r-g had 16v and was used in early celicas up to ~82
edit- must clarify- SOME 18r-g had 16v heads.

just seems to me that somebody of the last 20 years would have put a 16 valve DOHC head together for the 22 series motors, i dunno i asked a friend and he said it was cause toyota hates us lol.

First off, no celica ever came with an I6... Second off, while the 22RE is not much of a power monster and getting it that way will require quite ALOT of money and engineering, it IS one fo the most reliable motors ever made.

Stay the hell away from the 3.slow V-6, while tempting for the added displacement, all you really get is worse milage and not alot more power, plus they're maintenance nightmares.

The 3RZ is a really great swap for these trucks and I'm kind of regreting not doing that swap myself (even more bummed out I didn't do the 1KZ-T diesel swap MMMMMMMM DIESEL!!!!!)

Look into Engnbldr if youwant hop up bits for the 22RE, they're heads and shoulders above the rest, TED is a Toyota engine GOD. LC engineering and DOA racing are others that might have what you need. I've been tempted to give their SC a try on my 22RE.

the biggest thing that you need to do for these motors is get the gearing corected if you're running bigger than stock tires.it makwes a world of difference. my friends 22RE 2nd Gen 4Runner with 33 and the matching 4.88 gears feels ALOT more powerfull than my truck with 31's and 4.10's

Cheers

Dave

The 5M(G)E was available 1981-1986 in the Celica Supra.

Yeah but thats the supra. Only the first year or so had the celica badging still on it and then it was just supra.

The Toyota Supra was a sports car/grand tourer produced by Toyota Motor Company from 1979 to 2002. The styling of the Toyota Supra was derived from the Toyota Celica, but it was both longer and wider.[3] Starting in mid-1986, the Supra (in its third generation, MKIII) became its own model and was no longer based on the Celica. In turn, Toyota also stopped using the prefix Celica and began just calling the car Supra.[4] Due to the similarity and past of the Toyota Celica's name, it is frequently mistaken for the Toyota Supra, and vice versa.

Throttle body = useless
2.25 inch header = a few ponies
Cam = moves the power around
Oversized valves = a few ponies
Injectors = useless

$1500++ for Max 25hp.......maybe????
$2500 for 3.4L for 100+ hp
Do the math.

The other route is low compression pistons and a turbocharger. Even then your still only at 140hp if your lucky.

IMHO!!!

Hmm, Wish I would have found this a few months ago. Just bought a Reman and got it installed this weekend. Now if I could only find some good reman fuel injectors for a decent price!
