In my 89 runner with 22re, i ran a tank and calculated the mpg, and even with driving it like an 80 year old woman and never letting it rev above 3k, I only got 19mpg. Is this typical? anything i can do to make it better?

I've had several Toyota trucks with the 22r/22re 5speed combo and they all got the same mpg (18-20) no matter how I drove them.

That sounds about right to me. I get about 17 crossing a big city every morning, but not too much traffic.

I've gotten as good as 26mpg on the highway.

You could buy 28" tires if you don't have them already. Craigslist often has them cheap-ish. Remove the spare around town if you have AA.

Aside from that, there isn't too much you can do. These engine were designed to be efficient and durable by brilliant Japanese engineers. NOt much shade-tree mechanics like ourselves can do to improve upon the very feature the engine had incorporated into its design.

 

My runner gets 21-19mpg regardless of what I do....


my truck which is lighter weight and has more mods gets 22 if I floor it everwher but has gotten 42mpg on the hwy while going for max fuel economy....

I usually get 28-32mpg cty/hwy

What size tires and what gear's do you have???

With my Basket rack, 31's and 4.10's my 22RE is getting 15mpg with predominantly city driving for my commute with a short bit of freeway at the end. On the highway fully loaded including the basket, I get about 18-19. I'm hoping going to narrower 33x9.50's and 4.88's will get me a few mpg back. Another issue is I need to tune my engine. I've been really busy lately, and I suspect that after finaly breaking in at just over 5k on the new motor that a few things are slightly off.

Honestly if it werent for being one fo the toughest motors out there and a direct relacement for my old motor, I would have gone one of 3 other ways, all still wearing the toyota badge, for my truck. I want my 1KZt, anyone want to buy a Bone stock Engnbldr 22RE

i get about 22 in my 84 4wd with a 22r but i drive like an old man!
edit: a tuneup and seafoam will help a little.. also check yer air filter

In my 86 4Runner I consistently get 21 mpg combined freeway and in town. My 1987 I bought in new got about the same as I recall.

my '88 22re gets about 15.5mpg around town. I've seen up to 18, but that wasn't sustained highway.
31" A/T tires and a 5spd.

Running SeaFoam through it resulted in 18mpg for a couple tanks, then it tapered back off.
I'm just about convinced my barn-door MAF sensor isn't as free-moving as it should be.

 

And your tire size also matters when calculating mileage. If you have 31's on your rig, after you figure out your mpg off of your tank, you can multiply your mpg by 1.06 (6% increase in circumference, notice your speedo is off?) in that case, 19 mpg turns into 20.14. Not a huge difference, but a difference nonetheless. Look up a tire size calculator, and measure up your tire size vs. stock size, they will give you the percentage difference to multiply your mpg against. Hope this helps.

Oh yeah, I saw a 2mpg increase by running motor silk. Alot of people call it snake oil and loop it together with prolong, duralube and all the other crap, but its not a ptfe type lubricant. I have used it on my last 6 or 7 cars, and will continue to use it. You can and will hear and feel a difference if you use it. I went from 22 to 24 mpg on my 87 4Runner with a 22re 5 speed and 235/75/15's. (a 2% diff in tire size)

And the Motor silk tranny supplement smoothed out the shifts on my old 4Runner (87 auto transmission). It helped the mileage, but even that couldn't make the auto tranny NON-GUTLESS!!

How much?

 

I average around 20-24 city / highway / either or... with my 88 4Runner, 4" lift on 31" tires.
There's only so much you can expect when you push a brick through the air.

Makes me wonder what the terminal velocity of a 1st gen 4Runner would be.

 

I bought my truck new back in December 1994 and through all of the tire and gearing combinations I've run I've gotten 15-17 mpg every time I have checked it. For a 4 cylinder engine, the economy sucks.
