good day
my 92 22re is loosing coolant, alot
and overheating
oddly it appears to overheat more when full of coolant
and then the temperature goes back toward normal after a bit
(perhaps air behind the thermostat?)
l pressure tested the cooling system recently
and soldered a leak on the radiator
my friend who drives the truck regularly
said she saw white smoke at least once
but not all the time...
there is a tiny bit of milk on the filer cap
but the oil is clean
(full disclosure: have a rear mainseal leak -- waiting on the clutch to fail to replace it -- so the oild gets topped up with every tank)
the plugs are ash fowled
white and crusty
not clean...
thoughts?

How much coolant are you adding every day?/Have you pressure tested since the radiator repair.??
These engines are great for Air Pockets and pushing coolant out.
What brand and heat range plugs??

i was losing coolant slowly for a long time, no water leaks around engine or radiator...no white smoke. I found i had a very small leak in my headgasket on No. 4 cylinder. The compression numbers were all up...180-185psi. I found it by removing one of the heater hoses by the firewall and leaving the open end above the engine to keep the hose filled with coolant and blocking off the opened heater core tube end.. Put a ratchet on the crank pulley bolt and rotate the engine SLOWLY with the plugs still in. You should hear some blowby on each cylinder as it comes up on TDC. This is normal. I found my No. 4 had a very small leak past the headgasket into the cooling jacket. The compression stroke by hand would push air into the cooling system and the the coolant came out of the heater hose. When I turned the engine over with the starter the compression/decompression was too fast to allow the bleed down of the cylinderinto the coolant line/system. Very sneaky.
Just my experience.
Also apparently after I would drive my truck and park it up, the hot coolant would seep into the cylinder and sit on top the piston. I didn't drive my truck alot so when I did find the problem and removed the head, I had a rust ring in the cylinder wall where the piston had stayed during a long parked up period......yeah...made my day.
Good Luck.

thanks guys
l dont drive the truck
but l think she was adding water every day...
l did a pressure test yesterday
(bike pump on the blow off tube -- worked like a charm)
found two leaks
including one in that horseshoe hose that is hidden under the intake manifold
what a ptia....
gonna burp it today and keep my fingers crossed

(new hoses/coolant)
just burped it....
huge amount of air
lots of little bubbles and one big glug:
took at least half a gallon more coolant
one more question though
the water pressure "surged" more that l remember from last time l did this
(timing chain a year or so ago)
what l mean is, the level of coolant rose and fell seemingly randomly
though it was often associated with a coming air bubble
but even after all the air seemed to be out
the level would surge and drop surge and drop
(more rhythmically this time -- but not related to any thign as far as could tell)
is this normal?
indicative of a problem?
thanks

On a side note my '95 22RE sometimes makes gurgling noises
from the heater core. I can detect a slight coolant smell in the
cab at times, but not often. Heater core leak or air pocket
running around ? No evidence of coolant loss at all yet.
300,000 km's on it. Found a tiny dime sized milkshake
on the inside of oil fill cap, oil is fine.

well its still eating water
and over heating on longer drives
im gonna check of leaks again
but it seems like its head gasket time
and other thougts or tests?
thanks

found another post on here some where
which said:
if your coolant is surging (and bubbling) when COLD
(running with cap off radiator)
you have a head gasket leak between exhaust and coolant
and mine most certainly does that
oh boy
is head gasket time
