22re Boged Down

Hi community,

This is my first post, however I have been reading these forums for the last 2 months.

I have tried everything.... so I need some advice.

I purchased my 91 toyota pickup 22re in september for $950 bucks. The engine needed some serious work because it would not turn over. I pulled the head and chain cover to discover a nut in the #4 cylinder. See picture for damage. I cleaned up this damage, then reassembled the engine with new seals according to the Haynes manual.

Engine starts and idles smooth, compression on cylinders 1-4 is 130, 130, 140, 110 (damaged cylinder)

I set the timing to 5 degrees btdc with the Te1 E1 diagnosis ports shorted, it idles ~500 rpm, when I remove the short it jumps to ~600. The issue I am having is the lack of power. The truck will barley climb a 10 degree incline. If I got it onto a road, I suspect the top speed would be ~20-30 km/h. The throttle response is very slow. When I floor it in neutral it maxes out at 4k rpm.

When I turn the distributor CCW to the extreme limit it idles around 1500-2000rpm, although the idle is very high, the truck has considerably more power and is easily able to climb the same hill. Although it has more power, I believe it is still lacking a significant amount of power as its top speed is ~100 km/h, and when I try climbing a small hill going 80km/h it bogs down and gradually slows when its floored.

I have replaced the TPS and recalibrate it, there are a few small vacume hoses that are disconnected, the #4 cylinder exhaust manifold has a small leak, and the power steering fluid leaks through the cap.

I was very careful when installing the timing chain, I am fairly certain that the shiny links are installed correctly with the dimples. Also when I floor it, a heavy cloud of smog looms, maybe burnt oil?

All help is gratefully appreciated

also the computer flashed codes 41, and 43. But now flashes on off on off.... suggesting everything is normal.

Time to rebuild it.. I mean get a rebuilt long block. I was in the same situation with my '91 22RE. My compression was 130,130,130, and 90.. It would idle fine but could hardly climb a hill, I was able to get it up to highway speeds but only at WOT. I decided to go with a performance rebuilt long block and expect way more power than my worn out 22RE (waiting on the engine to arrive). Honestly felt like my engine was putting out 60 to 70hp.

Head is trashed. That cylinder's wall is probably trashed, too. Like was said, long block needed!

Cylinder wall was in surprisingly good condition, I am not looking to put much money into this fix. It will either be patch up this engine, or swap in a second hand engine that is known to run decent.

Im not expecting much from this truck, just cruising on the highway at 110 would be great, and the occasional offroading in the neighbors lawn

Soo the truck is fixed. I purchased a timing light and set the ignition for 5 degress btdc. Half way though my test ride I started to hear a cracking noise at high rpms, I was worried however the more It cracked and backfired the more power I had. So I opened it right up and was close to the rev limit. Anyways the cracking stopped and the tuck runs smooth now. I suspect something in the exhaust was plugged. Once its gets up to speed on the highway its nice and easy to keep it there, and suprisinly smooth, at least compared to before.

Let the fun begin.
