what are u aiming for in a car?

ive heard from several people that the 22re was the best engine toyota ever made. Its downside is that it has very little power.

for a DD, i would recommend staying with the 22re, but if its gonna be in ur fun / project car put in the 3rz but just be ready to work on it and cope with problems

proper gears, along with minimalizing lift, will mitigate most issues with mileage, though not all.

Uhhh what?? Just incase no one knows, which it doesnt seem like. The 3Rz is a direct descendent of the 22re. toyota wanted to improve on the 22r and add 8 valves in the process while increasing head flow, as well as switch the sides for intake and exhaust. The 3rz have been known to go 300+ on original HG and Timing chain. So you my friend need to get your facts straight. Oh btw, The 3rz have a bellhousing pattern that happens to bolt right up to W and R series trannies, IE: commonly found behind most 22re/3vz. The 3rz swap will net you around ~~40 HP, not sure on tourqe numbers. But if you feel your 22re is underpowered id say your gears arent optimal for your tire size.

yeah, the 2R and 3R engines are derived from the other R series engines, the 22R being the most infamous...
doesn't mean they are 'interchangeable' as easily as it sounds...
kind of like taking an 18R and replacing it with a 22R

or replacing a 3VZE with a 3VZFE

similar they may be, just don't open your mouth if you don't have the answers

Just my opinion.

Keep the 22re, it's a solid and reliable motor although underpowered.
The 3rz is also a pretty good motor (not as reliable as 22re: my opinion). The gains that you would net from the swap aren't enough to warrant the trouble of the swap. If you really want to swap something in for more power go for the 3.4, that is more worth the time and trouble. Again, just my OPINION.

thats kinda the answer i was looking for, i know whats required to do the swap. just didnt know if its worth it in the long run. i just did a HG on my friends 95 taco with the 3rz, even after 160k the cross hatch marks in the cylinder were visible. the block was pitted badly were the gasket was blown out. i probably will just stick with the 22re. keep the opinions coming though, thanks guys

22re is the best engine ever made if you compare to same technology. I don't find them that under powered like most people (unless you are trying to mud bog it, then you need a V8). It is not a V8 but if it is running right and have a 5 speed there is nothing you can not do with it. The 3rz will give you better milage though..........

PS I see you have a Yz450, best bike ever made.....I had a 426.

3rz bolts into your tranny, just have to use the w59 bellhousing i believe, and just move the motor mounts and your golden.

Plenty have done it on marlincrawler board.

I would do it if i had a 22r or 22re. the only bad side is wiring it.

Have you considered upgrading the 22re's Cam, Header, Exhaust? That may get you closer to the power you want, and maintain the positive benefits of the 22re.

x2 this is good advice, the 3.4 is an awesome motor.

from all the research I have done over the years, if swapping the 22re out and keeping the w56 trany. the 7mge engine is much more worth the trouble for swapping the engine than the 3rz. they both require similarr work cost is nearly the same and the 7mge has more power and pretty nice mpg for that power. Other than the 7mge the 3.4 swap is cool but you need an R tray.

Some people have bad experience with LC customer service and some people have good, but on the other note, ENGNBLDR.COM has great products, a 261 cam would probably get you what you want without going crazy on fuel mods and junk
