Pinions fail from a combo of being TINY (fewer teeth in contact with the ring at once) and usually being set up with a crush sleeve which will also open 5.29's up for failure. Everyone I know that beats Toyota gear broke gears regularly till going 4.10 with a high pinion front. That's on trailer only rigs on 38 or better TSL's. One guy still lunches diff parts regularly in a buggy but I attribute that to a lack of driving experience and the 42" SX's. He just couldn't be talked into a V8 and 1 tons the first time around.
