22R overheating after new head

Hi All,

My brother just gave me his 1987 truck with a 22R. A few months back a coolant hose broke and the truck overheated. The head was warped so he replaced the head and gasket. Now the truck runs fine but will overheat in traffic.

Any ideas on where I should start? Is a block crack likely?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

New radiator would be my first go to.
Check thermostat. Use oem only.

Check fluid clutch of the fan. It should have a nice resistance, and a very high res when overheating.

Overheating in traffic is most likely the fan clutch has failed. With the age of these trucks I would replace the fan clutch regardless. Rock auto sells them.

Possibly a stopped up radiator. Has the truck ever sat up for an extended period of time?
