22r. I think?

Just picked up. 90' 2wd. It has a 22re valve cover but is carbureted. How do I tell which one it is? Also, im getting a tapping noise in the head Id say around 3k rpms to 4k rpms but goes away at higher rpms and isn't prominent at idle. Any info is appreciated. Dont worry I alread ditched the hideous topper.

cam and rockers look worn. Possibly thats the cause of the tapping? Chain and guides look good

Going to set the valves cold at .006 and .010 see if that makes a difference. Going to buy a new head eventually

Probably has a wiped cam. If it has a carb, then its on its second engine. Conversion to carb from FI requires effort. Chances are you will fail to set proper valve clearances due to the top of the cam lobes having grooves cut in them or worse missing.

Adjusted valve to original spec. .007 and .011 cold. Some were very loose. Runs substantialy better and the ticking has quieted quite a bit. May re adjust to .006 and .010 cold but for now its bareable. Going to order a new complete head and rockers and keep them on stand by. 220k and ticking strong. Chain is tight and plastic guides in good shape. Looks like it was recently replaced. New valve cover gaskets and painted it too. Fresh mobil 1.

Love these little trucks. This one is the cleanest Ive had. Tick on brothers!

You have the carbed truck. I think it was 91 or 92 that they stopped making carb trucks and went to just fuel injected motors. Adjusting the valves makes a big difference.
