Ok so in my brothers 93 pickup with 22re, the manual calls for 4.5 QTS with filter. Checking oil cold or hot it reads high on the dipstick like a half quart. I think he should drain some out to read good on the dipstick, he thinks its fine. Who is right? Lol

All always used a bigger then stock filter

I have always used 4.5 with the OEM filter on, which reads to the top of the line.

I have measured how far the dip stick falls into the oil pan, because I was curious to. It is not an exact measurement due to the angles and such, but the dip stick has a 1 1/2 inch gap between it and the oil pan. Now this part of the pan is the small box part that acts kind of like a sediment trap. I bet there is a 1/2 court that could fill that gap. The dip stick falls below the plane of the oil strainer/pickup tube.

 

22r pans are the same size on both 2wd and 4wd, the 3vz-e is the one with differing capacity.

Not sure what that last post is ment to say, sure seemed informative Think it's saying there might be a half quart of sludge in the pan.

Another possible cause for an apparent "over fill" would be a damaged/dented pan. Or didn't wait long enough while draining to get it all out or warm up the engine prior which speeds/slows the process.

The "proper" proceedure is to dump in the 4 quarts and give it enough time to reach the pan then slowly add in the last portion untill it reads properly on the stick. If you're just going to blindly pour in your oil you might as well go to walmart or jiffy lube

And just for reference, the hash marks on the stick usually are one quart between low and full, and the higher you get the more volume so it's not a linear scale.

 

Google it tons of threads on swapping oil pickups and pans on engines.
Personally swapped an 87 2wd 22r into an 88 4wd oil pickups and pans were definitely different, to clear front diff on 4wd.

 

Yes pans are different however he was saying the capacity is still the same

 

I don't have a 2wd owners manual, so this is probably correct. 4wd pan seems bigger though, I could be wrong.

 

I've owned both 2 and 4wd trucks. I run a k/n filter and 5 quarts of oil. Always have. If its wrong then it seems to be right.

 

Thanks for the replies guys. He is using the spec filter size, not Toyota tho but I'd think it would be close to same. My thought is even if he were to take a half quart or more out until its in the hash marks he'd probly be better off than overfilling. From my knowledge overfilling is hard on seals and valve guides right?

 

The main issue with over filling is foaming/aeration from the crank hitting the MUCH higher oil level.

I really don't think 1/2 quart is going to hurt in this case. I've run 5 qts in my 22RE for years.

I have always put in exactly 4.0 qts. This brings it ever so slightly above the F mark on the dipstick when using a Wix standard sized filter.

You guys putting in 5.0 qts... where does this bring the level on your dipstick?
