I have a 1991 Toyota pick up with a 22-RE. It has 134,000 miles on it. When the engine is started cold there is no ticking, and it actually sounds fairly quiet compaired to some other 22r's I've heard. But, as the temp rises it starts to tick and it is pretty loud by the time it gets to normal temp. It's a rythmic TICK-TICK-TICK-TICK that gets faster and slower with the rpms. The noise is defenatly comming from the top of the motor, seemingly louder in the back. I was going to try adjusting the valves first. What else could be the problem?

I belive its 7 exhaust and 11 intake when cold and 8 intake and 12 exhaust when warm. (Ive always had better luck doing it cold)

 

I'm not sure if its the valves cause it does not tick when it's cold. Is this what happens when valves need adjusting?..the noise starts after the motor has been running for about 10 minutes?

 

It is common to hear the noise only after the warmup, in my experience. Oil gets thinner, provides less of a cushion. I had that problem on a 22re last year, just before a valve spring broke. Took about 2 months to get loud enough to catch my attention. About the time I was going to fix it, an exhaust valve spring broke. After replacing the valve spring, all was quiet again. Apparently the valve spring was weakening, so the valve may have been not seating properly, or fast enough, or whatever. MPG had dropped from 18 to 17mpg in those months. Returned to 18 after the spring replacement. (about 1/4 of my driving is first/second gear dirt/hill driving, otherwise mileage on the 22re would be around 21, if I recall)

Not to suggest that is what is happening with yours, just that an adjustment is the right thing to do.

 

fuel injectors also make a LOT of noise, it's easier to hear when the engine kicks down after warmup.
