2 qts of oil every 1k miles
Hi all, I have 86 4runner 22re, its using 2 quarts of oil every 1000 miles. It is not leaking and i do not notice any smoke. She has 238k miles on her. Is it time for a rebuild or is there a remedy that i could try to stop the oil consumption. Thanks

If it is not leaking and you are losing 1qt every 500 miles, you are burning it. Now the question is why.
A) Your head gasket is leaking oil into the cylinders (bad)
B) Your rings are worn out and allowing oil to bypass them into the cylinders (very bad)
C) Your PVC valve is clogged, causing pressure to build up and pushing oil past your rings (you want this to be the cause)
I'd start by inspecting and replacing your PVC valve. The part is $5 or less and located right on top of your valve cover. A very easy repair.
If that does not fix your problem you can perform a leak down test to check the condition of the rings with the proper tools, but at that point I'd say you are looking at a rebuild regardless as it would not make sense to just do the head on an engine with that many miles.
If the PVC does not resolve the issue you can run a heavier weight oil (20w50) if you are not already to help mitigate the oil burn rate but it will not solve the problem.
