Don't have a 1st gen 4runner but chiming in to note that I just purchased 2 stainless steel folding boat cup holders that I intend to bolt onto my doors thanks to this thread. Ran me $60 but I didn't want to have to keep replacing broken ones.

I just found these thingers, my 4 runner is a no runner right now so I am not getting them yet CLICKY
Stupid JCWhitney only going to the home page, but they look like they would bolt or screw to the door, us sr5 people would have to get rid of the map pocket since this would cover it up and it also has one built in, They call them "door storage racks"

I just picked up a wedgie from walmart. I wedged between the passenger seat and console but it's finicky at times, so I put it in the passenger map holder pocket and it's sturdy.

for my 86 I took off the stock lid of the center console, traced it onto some mdf, cut it out, used a big hole saw and cut out a hole towards the back, covered it in marine vinyl, attached a hinge to the new lid/stock hole, viola cup holder.

ive got stainless cup holders from marine boat supply store, they have 2 hinge swivels, and can bolt anywhere with one bolt, other words when you go left, it straight, when you go up, stays straight, they are awesome

1st gen Cupholders at last
This is a follow up to my earlier post on this thread. If you recall, I purchased the top portion of a center console from a Ford Explorer. I picked this one because they have a pull out cupholder for the rear passengers. It was a pretty simple install. I basically attached the arm rest from the Explorer to the top of my old 4runner arm rest. Here is the finished product:

I have an 84 with rear heat, so my console lid is very small and I have the taller console. I had to adjust the armrest so that when the cupholder is pulled out, it won't interfere with the shifters and that it could be opened fully. On the underside of the Explorer arm rest, I screwed in a piece of wood trim. It's painted black, so its hard to see, but that gave me a flat surface to attach my old center console lid to. The cupholder is sturdy, and adjusts to a degree, but it won't hold a super Big Gulp, if that's what you want to hold.
The arm rest is hard to find at salvage yards because the hing that attaches it to the Explorer is part that fails frequently and usually cracks the plastic of the arm rest when it breaks. I must have looked a 30 Explorers to find this one. I might paint it, but that might be more of a hassle than I want to deal with, and I don't want to walk around with a doo doo brown elbow if it starts to rub off.

I think the year range was from 98 to 2001? but I am not sure about that. The console is also found in sport tracs and Rangers. If you find a pick and pull that has some cash for clunker cars, there should be plenty of Explorers. Just start walking around and looking in the windows until you find one that's clean. Check to make sure that the ABS isn't cracked and that the center of the pad is not blown out.
