1st gen 4runner Auto Trans

Hey Ive got another question before i move forward buying the 87. It has an automatic transmission. I had the 5 speed manual in my 85 truck. I was just wondering how well the automatic transmission holds up and how well it performs?

Its a tough auto. 340f. same auto behind the supercharged 3.4. so if you would ever want to upgrade the trans should bolt up to the 3.4. The wiring harness connection might be a little different so it wont be a direct plug in but you could still make it work.

What engine is in that '87? V6 or 4 Cylinder?

The V6's came with the A340H, which is in the same family as the A340F.

Most 4 cylinders came with the A340F.

The big difference is the fact that the A340H has an integrated transfer case. It is essentially another trans bolted on the back and it contributes to the lack of power in the V6 autos. Lots of drag.

The A340F has a separate, bolt on chain drive transfer case.

If you want to do a doubler down the line, it is very expensive to do it on the A340H.
