1993 Emergency Brake

Ok so I pulled into a parking spot last night and pulled my emergency brake and it came completely out of the dash. The cable unhooked and the handle came out. Can someone tell me how to get it back in I have tried everything I can think of and can't seem to get it. Thanks

You do plan to fix the broken cable ??

To slide the handle back in you have to move the ratchet assemble so the handle slides in.

Without being in the truck I can`t be more specific with directions.

If it came completely out, my money is on that the cable broke. At the end of the cable where it connects to the handle there is a slug that goes into the handle connected to the cable. You are going to need a new cable.

At the very top of your handle, there are two tabs. If I recall right, one tab has to pushed forward and the other tab has to be pushed the opposite way. That will let the handle slide down far enough to insert the slug back into the handle. That is how I do it when it is in the truck.

I find it easier to undo the slug just forward of the gas tank and then there is a clip or two under the body and remove the whole cable assembly out as one piece. There are two nuts on the firewall and two bolts just above the handle that hold the parking brake assembly in the truck.

The two tabs on the parking brake assembly have to be manipulated just right to let the handle slide down far enough to insert the slug with new cable.

There is a tab near the firewall that operates the brake light. When the handle is all the way in it shuts off the brake light. When handle is pulled out, it lights the brake light.

This tab may or may not need to be removed to let the handle slide further down to get to the slug into its slot. I don't remember if you will need to remove it. I think it is basically a screw that you just twist out.
