Question 1992 4Runner 4X4 HELP!

Not sure is this is the right thread or not, First post... But...

Hello, I just bought a 1992 4Runner a few weeks ago, as my brother, also a member of this site (JEDI87) has had a few runners in his day. It's an automatic, 4x4, with 224,000 miles on the truck, 113,000 on the Motor.

Now here's my issue... When I kick it into 4hi I can hear something engaging. But the 4wd light does not come on. I put it into neutral, Put it in 4lo, no 4wd light. Now sometimes when I keep it in 4hi for a couple miles (It's intermittent), the light will come on and I will feel the front wheels start spinning.

Once I am on dry ground again, I put it it back into 2wd at a stop, stick it back into 4wd and it still comes on. Now once i start rolling and gain speed... then come to a stop and try 4hi again, it does not come on.

I checked the vacuum lines going into the switching solenoid under the hood, next to the Dr. side Fender. I haven't had time to check the lines on the Actuator, They look like they're on there pretty good. Could the lines be clogged? Or has the actuator gone bad? Is there a way to check without removing it? Also, I was told to check the Linkage. When it's in 4hi, and you're putting into 2wd you don't need to press the button as it pops back in with just a push of the gear selector. Now keep in mind, Even when I put it into 4lo, no light comes on.

What can I do to figure this out?? Thanks!

Thanks!
Going out right now to check all the lines, and clean the ports on the actuator. I'll let you know what comes of it!

hiya mate, i have a 2nd gen 2.4 hilux surf similar to your 4runner, mine is also auto and i had a similar problem. mine was a 1 way valve which is on the vac lines for the 4 wheel drive.

the one way valve is the blue thing on the black vac line mate in the picture
try changing that, it cured my light problem

Amazing.
Thank you!

I did check the vacuum lines and the connections to the VSV this morning, Everything seemed dandy, I took the lines off, checked them for damage and connected them back. once I connected them it gave enough vacuum to the Actuator for it to engage. I immediately took it out of 4wd and tried to put it back in, Wouldn't go back into 4wd. So I did the same thing with the lines, and it worked. I'm guessing the vacuum pipe is clogged, or the lines really are damaged somewhere that I did not see.

Should I replace the lines and clean out the pipe, or is there something else I should do before replacing?

Replaced... Made no difference.
I'm stumped now.

I just saw this post. After I read it, I went out to take a look... I found it and instead of replacing it I just bypassed it. You're a genius!

Problem Solved!

Well, I was a dumb@ss and routed the vacuum lines wrong, so one of the lines has started to melt. Looks like I'll have to re-route it but at least I know how to fix it this time

I have found that it is somewhat normal for some delay. The collar for the front drive disconnect has to slid onto the shaft and if it is not lined up it takes a bit some times. The sensor on the collar has to come on and the trans sensor for the transfer case has to come on for the 4X4 light. The one on the transfercase comes on right away because you are manually moving it but the vacuum has to shift the collar so it will not always come on right away.

Always a bummer to pass up a roadin' trip.

I don't have big plans for her yet... I want to get a 4" suspension lift and get some nice 33's to stick on her. Get the windows tinted darker. Been looking for some clear corners and bumper lights but I can't seem to find any. Found some on ebay for about $60.. that usually what they go for?
