1991 4runner 22re overheating problem
I recently overheated my old stock 22re motor and ended up buying a rebuilt 22re motor at a shop. The stock motor had 214k miles on the thing. The problem is when I am driving at 65mph or idling the temp. slowly raises to 210 and stays around that area. When i am driving at 45mph the temp. stays around 190 but sometimes hits 200. I replaced the fan clutch, put it a 180 degrees thermostat 3 times, flushed rad. twice, bought a new rad. cap, and cleared all air bubbles by taking off the rad. cap and turning on the heat to FULL. I am not really worried about it staying around 210 since the motor still seems to run normal but when living in arizona and temps hit 115 degrees outside I really want to use my ice cold A/C but when I turn the A/C on it just raises to 220 and above. Im stuck and dont know where to turn now. Hope I gave a good description of my problem because im a newbie mechanic. Any help would be great thanks.

replaced water pump and belts are tight also have a fan shroud on as well, I have the timing at 5degrees past tdc its what chiltons said to put it too. im not sure about the egr how can i check to make sure its work ok?

Sounds kinda like your radiators getting pretty clogged. At idle it creeps up and while moving it stays steady. Think about how at idle other than the fan there's no cool air around the motor, and at 65mph what are you revving at?
Once it gets to a certain point those flushes don't do too much. I'd probably take that rad to a rad shop and ask for a proper flush done to it. They put some chemical in it and do a sonic flush to it. Kinda like when you buy a can of paint and they shake the hell out of it.
The last one I did was overheating on hot days while idling and going up hills. I sent it in to the rad shop, they tested it first and determined that it was too clogged to flush out. Bougth a new one.

I was actually thinking on just buying a new one but only problem is im afraid of it not fixing the problem and im out 400$. How much do rad sonic flush cost at shops?

I can't recall exactly how much, it's cheaper than a new rad though. Id call a couple shops and see if they can test it to see if it's clogged, befoe asking for a flush. Most of the time if it is clogged they don't charge you for the flush or checking the flow but sell you a rad at a premium price. It might be more economical to pay em for a test buy one of those $115 rads.

you can check the flow yourself!! take the rad out put a hose in the top and if it comes out slow and starts overflowing out the top then its close to being clogged. if it runs out as fast as your dumping it in then its fine.

put the hose in the top...? did someone forget to say which top? the inlet to the rad or the cap?

Ok so i took the rad out and put the hose at the top, it never overflowed and it seems to pour out fast at the bottom. So its not clogged? I was also thinking it might be a clogged tube somewhere. The upper and lower rad hoses are new. Should i check the TPS hoses?

when i took the rad. out the rad. looked really dirty so i sprayed the hell out of it with the hose and also fixed a few fins. I flushed it thro the upper hose hole and also the cap hole both flowed the same. I called autozone and they said only one they got for my year is a rad. that they would have to order in for 180$. Maybe I should just get it checked?
