My statment still stands. Throw a set of 36" on there. You can still have the wide streached out tire but you will actually have some diff clearance now.

Lifting gives you a wider track width? No. New wheels, spacers or 1ton axles will do that. Lifting makes your truck higher... haha

I guess its the way they wanna do things.. good on em

I guess I was a little harsh a couple posts back.

Do what you like as long as it doesn't frighten the livestock.

 

I'll admit, it does look odd at first. Knowing it plays on the beach makes everything fall into place, in my mind. Being from So-Cal, where Glamis and Pismo Beach are just a few hours away, the vehicles that get further, more easily... are those with the widest tires, not the tallest.

Some of the posts are correct in suggesting that more appropriately sized tires (for what seems to be purely asthetic purposes) would work just as well. The problem I see with that though, is that larger diameter tires, in the sand, would require more torque to spin, thus requiring re-gearing.

I could see that truck traversing the beach on a set of D.O.T. approved Mickey Thomspon drag slicks and doing so nearly as well as Swampers. But you have to admit, the rooster tails have got to look cool.

So, I give the OP props for building a functional rig, that looks great. And if it should ever be sold, there are 1000's of people over here on the mainland that would buy it in an instant... then change the rims and tires.

 

being a person that frequents pismo I can say that 33x12.50s mts aired down do fine in the sand honestly a "fancy" tire pattern is not going to make that much of a difference. Obviously he wants to go fast in the sand and thats why its sas'd! and those tires make all the difference........... (sarcasm).

Why would you SAS a rig with the intention of going in the sand, this is where ifs actually redeems itself.

 

well, as stated above, a lot of the way that truck is set up is for looks... its the way its done where he lives... and about the tires, abes right... do what works... other tires may work just as well, but they are also a part of the look... i mean, he doesnt need to air down, and hes wide enough to "float" on the sand, so hes got his functionality...

honestly, there are plenty of street queens around here that are SAS'd for no reason other than to drive to school, so why are you guys giving him a hard time about doing what suits him?

True it is part function part image thing also. I'm not disagreeing with that but if you try to total the cost of modding a ride (including shipping) it gets pricey. I guess that's why image is part factor. Any motorsport hobby is pricey in Hawaii. Not to mention the price of gas.

I for one, as I mentioned, did fine with my all pro 5" lift SAS and 31" TSL on my stock geared turbo toy. But then again I (and not many people) had access to trails on military property and wide wheel base was not a requirement. I think the image thing go back to the "Cali" style rigs but with the mix of beach functionality. Hey you make with what you got: beach & concrete! Understand that almost all trails have been closed off for housing development on some islands and many rigs has converted to pavement and sand pounding.

I seen picks of some "redneck" lift that don't make sense. Like stacking blocks to get some lift, bending the drag link for clearance instead of a hy steer x-over kit, etc. but that's their thing let it be. I never lived in those places to judge those mods.

Since I moved to Vegas I noticed a lot of lifted rigs with chrome 80+ lb. "dubs" wrapped with low profile type mud tires. Does anyone know the purpose to that set up?

Thats alot of lift for a beach rig. But, it does look nice, so congrats on a clean lookin rig!

 

not all is like that. lanai where I stay we still get choke dirt road and gulches plus the sand. my 85 only has about 1 or 2 inch lift on 30x9.50 bridgestone mt and I can do everything because my terrain is different. go places where get pig hunt like maui and most is lifted for visibility over the pili and cane grass and to crawl the rock ledge to go fish. diff clearance no matter to us for the most part. we get the looks and function for our surroundings. approach, departure and breakover with the lift. make it look nice and then you drive away with one chick in the truck
