Wow...Whats the filter look like? Usually rust from the tank will get caught in the filter, I have never seen a fuel rail look like that.

Yah. Im very curious what the filter is doing. If you can take it out and cut it in half to share for eduvation, that would be great

That's good, hopefully this will fix your problem.
Post up when your finished.

Well I dropped the gas tank which took far longer than it should have because I forgot about the excess cover under the rear seat...... Gas tank was rusted but not as bad as I would have thought. It will get replaced though to ensure no further problems of this nature. Anyone have any suggestions for a good replacement gas tank? Does anyone know if they make a plastic one for these trucks or has anyone used a non factory replacement with any success?

While I'm this deep I was considering replacing a few items that are hard to get to or could cause problems. Here is a list of things I was considering. Any other suggestions?

Knock sensor wire harness
PCV valve
Valve cover gaskets
All vacuum hoses in engine bay
drive belts- Timing belt looks good still and was replaced 20,000 miles ago not sure how many years ago that was for this truck though....
Spark Plugs
Fuel Filter- Of course
Fuel Tank
clean out fuel lines, rail, and injectors

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

With 170,000 miles on it you might consider a valve adjustment, not as easy though as shims are used for this procedure.
I'm pretty sure there are some threads on doing it.

Before you replace all the vacuum hoses, consider that they are all factory-labelled. You'll lose that. Of course, you'll install all of them correctly, so you'll never, ever have to trace one ....

Yeah I was thinking since I'm this deep already I should check the valve clearance while I'm at it to prevent problems. I also thought about loosing the color coding on the vacuum lines but I guess I will just label the new ones.

Has anyone had any luck removing the large fuel line bolt on the rear of the passenger side fuel rail. I am trying to ensure I removed all the rust and that bolt is whooping me.

Second has anyone used a product call red koat to seal gas tanks or have other suggestions to deal with the small amount of rust in the gas tank.looking for some help on this one so I don't have this problem again.

The bolt in the back of passenger side fuel rail. I put as much force on it as I dared.. then said Eff this and left the rail on the fuel line during all my work. Lol

Note, there is a way to turn ur fuel pump on. Read the fsm section about injectors it tells u which lins to cross. Purge the line.

Work on the ol truck has been slow due to snow and lack of time but I have managed to get most of the rust out of the gas tank with a box of roofing nails and 2 gallons of purple power. Just threw the nails in with the PP and a few times a day go out to it and move it around so the nails knock off the light rust. My plan is have the nails and PP out of the tank by saturday so it will have time to dry so hopefully monday I'll pour some acetone in to ensure all oils and moistrue are gone and then apply Red Kote gas tank sealer to prevent the rust from comming back.

I have taken the valve covers off as well to check the valve specs but I haven't gotten around to that, hopefully next week as well.

Well I finally had some time to work on the runner and make some progress. I blew the fuel system out, cleaned the fuel injectors, fuel rails, and installed a new fuel filter. Cleaned the gas tank with a combo of purple power and roofing nails. Got the majority of the rust out then used a gas tank sealant called Red Kote. That stuff worked very well to seal the tank and appears to be a quality product. It does stick to what it touches including skin.... Put it all back together and primed fuel system and it started right up. Still have a few items to finish, reinstall TPS, reset timing, and flush coolant but all and all I think its good to go for now.

I hope you bought new copper washers for the fuels rail. I took off my fuel rail to clean my injectors since 1 and 6 where clogged, put everything back on and the dang rail leaked fuel everywhere when I started it. bought some new washers from toyota, they are cheap, also gonna put on new injector seals. good luck man
