I just finished taking the extension housing off of my W56 transmission and putting it back on, in order to replace the clip under the speedometer drive gear.

I learned that in order to get the extension housing back on and the trans working right, it had to be in 5th gear (the #1 fork - the top one - had to be pulled back, toward the rear of the truck with the tooth of the shift selector arm engaged in this fork).

After messing around with it for 10 or 15 hours, trying every other gear, and almost breaking down and having it towed to a transmission shop, I finally tried it in 5th gear, and holy @#%!, it worked!

Also, to get the speedo drive clip in the right spot, I had to take off the extension housing and slide the gear over the clip on the tapered (rear) end of the output shaft, then slide the gear and clip forward, as a unit, to get the clip into the right holes.

Thanks, Toyota, for making this clip such a bitch to get to! I should have followed the advice elsewhere on here, and just bought a cheap GPS.

Did you buy a new clip or just "re-work" or "bend" the old clip to restore its clamping force? Also, is the 5th gear thing the only PITA trick to know or is there other obstacles? The FSM is extremely bland and lacking of detail on removing that tailhousing.. sick of my speedo not working and wondering if that is part of my cruise control not working.. About to go dig into this job..

I just bought a new clip from the Toyota dealer for $2. The 5th gear thing was the only real tricky part about putting it back together - everything else was just a lot of work, but pretty straight-forward.

Well I wound up just going in through the shifter housing and tried my best to rework the clip as best I could by bending it to have a little more clamping force.. tricky but so far so good.. oh, and no cruise control without speedometers working.. ah it's nice to have it back! Hope it lasts..
