I'm trying to replace the speedometer cable on my 1990 4Runner, and I ran into a little problem. Not sure how to get the cable out of the inside of the cab. It runs through the tube in the picture below and the fitting will not allow it to go all the way through. Anyone know how to do this and then get the new one back through the fitting in the floorboard?

 

My 1990 22R has the speedo cable running through a grommet in the firewall then down to the tranny.

I bought a new, after-market cable which didn't have the grommet so I carefully cut it in half and re-glued it around the new speedo cable.

Perhaps check your firewall to see if there are any blank holes/grommets where you could run the new cable?

Also, what does the new cable look like?

 

Yeah, I have a 22RE that comes through the fire wall and grommet like you said. The problem is I stuck this 22RE in a truck that was previously a 3.0. So it has this setup that comes through the floor. As far as I can tell the cables are the same except maybe length because of where they come in. So I've thought about just trying to run the old one like you said.

On a side note, anyone know a good place to get a speedo cable? Dealer wants $100. The one at advanced doesn't have the right fitting, and no other parts store has carried them. Junk yard didn't have one either.

 

In Kansas City, Actually Independence Missouri, we have a speedometer shop. The guy can make any speedometer cable if you have the old one, so he can match the ends. He can make them any length. Maybe you can find onw in your area?

 

Looking for help with the exact same issue OP had. Anyone got any solutions?

Sourcing the cable isn't a problem. Look at OP's attached picture. That is the plate in the floor.

My speedometer recently went out. First it started only working or not working randomly but now not at all. My toyo is a 1992 standard dlx model . Does anyone know if mine is a cable or sensor type ? I’ve searched online and there’s no definitive answer. I don’t want to start messing with the instrument panel if I don’t have to.

 

My 1992 22RE two wheel drive is sensor. It's a made in California truck not Japan. Took the panel off to install new bulbs in the cluster.
