Talking 1990 Pickup DLX to SR5 Frame up body swap (pics included)

Hey everyone,

I got a 90 P/U has some rust on the rear coners of the cab, was going to cut and weld it, but came across a good deal on some new sheet metal.

This is my DD, it will only see light trail blazing from now on.

Anyway here are some pics of progress. My goal is to have it back on the road by Thanksgiving.

As she sits. I did some body work on the bed and bottom of the doors.

Started the strip down

Got the bed off, and started grinding, sanding, prepping the rear of the frame awhile. I just used Rustoleum gloss black.

THE PARTS CAME YESTURDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The new parts are off a 1990 SR5 V6, 5 sp. So now I've upgraded to tilt steering, clock, 60/40 bench, intermitten wipers ect. Also most of the AC components are there too, i will definitely try to get that back in order. This was the ONLY thing I wish my truck had.

Needs to be cleaned. Only flaws so far is the dash is cracked, and the roofs clearcoat is gone.

Yeah its not to shabby. Since the dash is cracked, im going to switch mine into it, but im going to paint mine black. I think alittle contrast would be good.

more progress......

Got some more done today. Since the new cab is a v6 i found some differences. The fuse box to fuse panel (kick panel) harness is different. So i had to swap that out. Luckily the passenger side harness unplugged from the fuse block, so i didnt have to swap the dash harness also. That would have sucked.

Here the 2 harnesses side by side. 22re on left, 3.0 on right. The battery cables were cut on the v6 harness.

22re on bottom

Heres the 2 black plugs that i un plugged from the block. Hopefully the rest of the dash harness is the same.

Does anybody know what these 2 plugs are for? i know that go to 2 vacuum solenoids, but what are they for? Any help will be appreciated. These 2 plugs are the only differences i seen so far. There are located right by the fuse block passenger side.

Here my engine with all teh accessories bundled up, ready for cab to be lifted.

I still have brake lines and fuel lines to disconnect, the we can have lift off.

Talking How to remove a cab by yourself.

I got the cab off by myself this morning. It was quite an adventure.

My pick point was the bracket that is welded on the body below the radio/climate control. As you can see it wasnt at its centroid. It was dam close, because i could just pick the back up and move it.

I would recommend removing the radio support thing that goes from the bottom to the top, i fudged it up. Also you might want to remove the heater core box, i cracked that too(that white thing).

I guess when i put the other cab on, i need to go another route. All in all it went good for a one man job. If you had one other persson, it would have been cake.

No time to clean and prep the frame for some paint.

Holy cow. Good job, get a second person when installing the cab; wouldn't want to damage anything. Be sure and take some more pics too. Good luck.

good work so far, and good idea on using the engine hoist to lift the cab i never thought of that before. i have always just rounded up a bunch of people when iv had to take a cab on or off witch sometimes means a few day delay in your project. also how is that working out with the whole clunker title thing?

Thanks for the comments. I def will have another person to put the cab on.

To do it by the book, i will use my vin/title and apply for new vin tags. New vin tag will match my current vin, then i guess i have to go somewhere to rivet them on.

were it me, this would take me an extra day, because I'd waste a day just trying to get it drivable as a rolling chassis, and then just drive down the street, maybe to the store or something, lmao

great progress man!
