1990 4runner trans issues
Hey all,
Just picked up a 90 auto v6. When in reverse and on flat ground the vehicle will usually begin to slowly move backward on its own, no pedal needed. If I'm on any kind of incline, I need to really mash on the accelerator to get any kind of movement, and it jolts into motion. With forward, if I let off the accelerator while in motion there's a noticable "brake"; a sudden substantial deceleration.
Some of the stuff I've read so far suggests draining the atf fluid, changing the filter, and possibly the solenoids. I've also seen changing the throttle position sensor suggested. Are these good places to start? Thanks

It seems you never got a response. Happens.
I would suggest getting a hold of a factory service manual. I know I bought the bound ones from Toyota like a decade ago; I seem to recall the Automatic tranny section (a book in itself) had a customer diagnostics trouble shooting tree. I know you can probably download one from a link on the stickys up top here.
Also, and its really cheap thinking about it - pop the $20 for a (i think) 48 hr (but at least 24 hr) subscription to the Toyota Tech Info System. You can download a butt-ton of stuff in 24hrs.

Hey,
thanks for the response. I went ahead and changed the atf and the filter, and while it has helped, reverse still seems not to have much ass to it. I'm looking at other options now. I'll scope out that sub service.

1990 T4r 4x4 auto. same/similar issue with the trans which gradually got worse so I paid a reportedly knowledgeable mobile mechanic to work on it and $500 later he was unable to resolve the problem. The pan was pulled and solenoids replaced but it continued to get worse, finally got to the point where I had the vehicle towed to a transmission shop $$$$. I did find a few sources for used or rebuild replacements but I am not that knowledgeable or tools or work area tor such a labor-intensive project. Found there are individuals who will search for local salvage yards and remove items for cost and labor fees. If one removes the trans to takes it to a reliable trans shop may be able to save a few $. Anyhow food for thought?
