My mother-in-law has a 89 4Runner 3.0 v6 that looks like the seal around the water pump is leaking. How big of a project am I looking at getting myself into? I figured on replacing the water pump and timing belt while I was in there. Any special tools I'll need or any tricks to make things easier?

so long as you have a good understanding of engines and know what you are getting yourself into, i think you will be okay. make sure you have a manual there with you to double check yourself. it is nice to have an impact gun to get the crankshaft bolt off of the harmonic balancer. be patient and good luck!

 

Yeah, you have to pull the timing belt so definatly have a manual handy. Also plan on replacing some other parts in there while your at it (belts, hoses, idler)

 

I have a chiltons manual which I guess is better than nothing. Is there anywhere online to look at a FSM? I've done quite a bit of work on my 22RE but I'm not that familiar with the 3.0.

Anything else that you guys suggest I replace while I'm in there?

**NOTE** this is not exactly like the 89 3.0 that you will be working on. it is VERY similar. Use it as a guide.

Well, I got the water pump out and it looks like it was just a bad seal. The pump turns freely and everything so do you think I should replace it anyway or just slap a new seal on it and call it good? Also the timing belt looks good too, no cracks or anything in it so I might just leave it alone also.

I would replace it while you have it out. Save you from having to do it again.

 

rep;ace it. we did that and it looked like a bad seal, so we put it all back togther only to take it back apart the next week because it was leaking. you might want to consider the belt too...

Ok, new problem. I got the timing belt and waterpump in fine not leaks. But this thing is gutless it revs fine in neutral but when you put it in gear and try to go it just lugs and hardly wants to move. Once I get it going if I just barely press the gas peddle it will go alright but if I try to get on it it lugs the motor down. Any idea's? Its got new plugs, wires, cap, and fuel filter.

I need to get this thing outta my garage.

I assume it wasn't doing the "new problem" before the repair, so since you removed and installed a timing belt.....did you check the timing? Reset it? Anything?

 

Well, I guess I shouldn't say new problem. It was gutless before but its gotten a lot worse now, before it would only lug really bad going up hill but now it does it all the time unless your just revving it in neutral. I did check the timing and its right on.

 

If you look here http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...63troubles.pdf under "drivability/poor acceleration", you'll see it could be several things. Does it seem to be temperature related? Does it run any better/worse when warm? How does it idle?

 

Doesn't seem to matter whether its warm or cold. It idles fine, right around 800.
