May want to go into your control panel and list your model, year and motor for your Yota in your "Signature" - that way we know what vehicle your talking about , I am assuming you are talking about the 4 cyl. since its '88 , and if you have the 3VZE 3.0 then the online manual has the same specs for that motor as well , the TPS is under "MFI System-Throttle Body" and emissions (egr, pcv etc) is under "Emissions Control System" .
Here is a copy of the 88-93 4 banger TPS adj/check specs from the FSM :

http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-buchanan/93fsm/engine/34throttle.pdf

And here is a link to the entire online manual for the 4/6 cyl (aka 93FSM) which is supposed to apply back as far as 88 for the 4 banger.

It is my experience that the TPS ( I have a later model though so maybe different) will not prevent your motor from starting so if I were you I would be looking at ignition and fuel for that problem taking for granted that the motor is turning over of course .

Hope this helps a little

I have an 88 with the 4 cyl. My TPS was way out and would not let me time it and the truck ran like crap. I too would look else where. Always start with the basics, spark, air, and fuel. thats just my .02. BTW I would take the whole throttle body off to adjust the TPS I thought it was easier to work on off the vehicle. Bill

Go to the link I gave you first and it and it will show you how to test on the car with a Ohm Meter .
You can try this link as well for a easier / more explantion test proceedure for the TPS :
http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/TPS/index.shtml

And yes you should test before you take off and remember to check your connector as if you have a bad wire the result would be the same , I had to replace mine last month , used the test proceedures and replaced it as the test clearly let me know the TPS was dead (in more ways than one hehe) but my motor would still run .........just not very well .

the truck is a 3.0 i have check every thing so far wires spark air fuel and all it does is crank and crank it has compersion next i am going to get a compersion tester but the mass airflow is gone in it which turns the fuel pump on so it wont start so i ran power directly to the fuel pump still just crank i dont know what is wrong i just want to call it quits soon

Well if you got fire to the plugs and gas to the cyliders then the only thing would be timing from there .
Mine will run without TPS - '91 , if you test the TPS and it is good then move on , if TPS is bad then replace and move on from there , allot of things it could be but if you got the code for TPS check and replace if bad .
Maybe it might not hurt to check your fuses (and the ones in engine compartment) , make sure your EFI Fuse is good - if not it won't start , if the EFI is good remove it for 30 secs and clear the ECM.
Other than that maybe your fuel pump is bad or filter stopped up , there is a diagnostic connector on most where you can start the pump to check if it runs , go thru the FSM and check these things out
