1988 4Runner Transfer Case problems
Okay guys, I have a broke transfer case(I'm pretty sure).
Symptoms: when in 4 wheel and only 4 wheel the front two wheels do not engage. I have a grinding noise from the T case. The drive shaft tries to rotate but you can plainly see it jump and shudder when watching from the side.
Tests I've conducted: Driven in 2 Wheel(all fine), driven in 4 wheel high/low(above symptoms).
Up on 4 jack stands, same results in all drives.
Jacked up front two wheels, when hubs are locked and 4 wheel engaged wheels spin opposite.
Wishful thinking easy fixes I've tried: repacked grease in drive shaft, T case oil change.
The grinding sound is coming from the T case. It is noticeable while hand spinning the drive shaft. While changing the T case oil I observed through the drain hole as the chain inside appeared to be slipping on the front drive shaft while hand spinning it.
I have searched and have been unable to find a rebuild thread on a chain driven T case. Also I have been unable to find any parts for one. I am aware of the Inchworm gear drive T case adapter for auto's but if I am going that route I will just swap to manual.
I believe my auto is a A340F with a VF2A.
Thanks ahead of time for the help, hoping to find a cheaper than swap or conversion fix for this.

It's not gonna be fixed without taking it apart.
The FSM will show you how to take it apart and re-assemble it.
You can't know how trashed it truly is without a look-see inside.
Any parts would have to come from the dealer (likely plenty $$$), there are virtually no aftermarket parts for the chain drive cases. (excepting bearings and seals)
A wrecking yard used unit is your only hope of a relatively cheap fix.
