1988 4Runner Fuel Sending Unit repair/replace
Just bought an 88 for my son. Fuel gauge is not working. I think it is the fuel sending unit. Where can I find a replacement? How do I check the existing one?

Same thing happened on my 88 when i bought it as well. More than likely it's broken because the wiper arm rubbed on the wire that reads out the resistance. It is possible to rewrap the wire and it has been done, but getting the exact resistance is time consuming and the chances of it working are next to none.
This should work for you:

Kind of pricey, but it should be new and in working condition. When mine broke I went to a salvage yard and bought a used one and put it in. Cost me 80 bucks, but has been working ever since.
You will also probably want this:

Yeah for eBay!
If you just take the part number (83320-39695 -- I'm counting on 88xtra4x4 that this is correct) and put it into google, you'll hit a bunch of sellers, many of which are actual brick-and-mortar dealers. This one http://www.toyotaonlineparts.com/oe-toyota/8332039695 will save you $48.
Of course, "Caveat Emptor."
