1988 3.0 Timing change

1988 4runner 3.0 manual. I blew the gasket on the water pump, looked like it had been leaking for a while , first puddle showed up this morning. Anyway, after I put it all back together, the idle was at 400rpms. Checked the timing and it was 5 degrees ATDC. OK, that’s not good. I figured I had the belt off a tooth. So just for the hell of , I reset the timing back to 12 BTDC where I have been running it. Engine smoothed out and idle was good. After a test drive , the engine has less vibration then it did before, (which really wasn’t much) even with the A/C on. Is it possible that when I did the timing belt 2 years ago I had it off a tooth then now it’s right ? Seems like a huge timing difference, which makes me nervous , but it actually seems to run better.
