1988 3.0 the same as 1994 3.0?

I may be able to get my hands on a 3.0 out of a 1988 4runner. is there a large difference between a 3.0 from 88 and 94?

o ya, the 88-92 3.0s were essentiall the same and hte 93-95 3.0s were the same. you would be able to get it in, but there will be a lot less 'crap' in the engine bay. go for it. You also wont have any problems with the HG since the early 3.0s werent prone to failing.

they also had about 10 less hp

sweet. looking here http://www.top4runners.com/ja/runhist21994.html it appears the biggest difference is an auto tensioner on the timing belt

Ive come across a few differences when buying spares for my 90 model, but mine has a replacement engine so i don't know what year it is.

I know the knock sensor is different, and on the dizzy to there can be differences with the wiring loom that comes out of it.

Lots of incorrect info in this thread, so be careful what you get.

The 1988 V6 was a stand alone engine. The mounts on the block are drilled and tapped in a different place. My assumtion is that they didn't want to create new frame mounts for the new v6 motor, and just left the 22R mounts there. An 88 engine will NOT bolt into any year but and 88. The mount bosses are not even there to drill and tap to be able to install the engine. Major PITA. You CAN go from a 94 truck into an 88, but you have to drill and tap the mount bosses.

**4runner was sorta correct, the 89-92.5 long blocks are the same, as are the 92.6-95 long blocks. In 92.5, Toyota switched to the hydraulic style tensioner, which required an extra hole be drilled in the Pass side head. The tensioners, fan support, and fan assemlies are all different between 89-92.5, and 92.5-95.

So, to answer your question, NO you cannot use the engine from the 88 in your 94.
