1988 22RE to be scrapped
I am scrapping an 88 4R with 22RE. I may put it in my 95 3.0 PU or my 89 3.0 4R. Do I need to keep all the under dash wiring etc or will the 22RE ECU work in the 3.0 harness? Is there anything special that I may miss when stripping the 88 that I will need later thats not obvious?
Will be keeping chassis with drive train but want to get rid of the rotted body and am taking anything off that looks like I can use it.
Thanks.Mike

Mike. The general concensus is that the 3.0L is not a good swap. It's a marginal power increase, significant decrease in efficiency, fairly expensive, and a general PITA. You can't keep your transmission.
The 22RE ECU will not work.
The engine bay wiring will not work.
Consider the 3rz as an alternative. You can use your existing driveline.

OK..let me make it clear, I am NOT looking for advice on what to swap! I have a 95 PU with a blown up 3.0 and an 89 4Runner with a 3.0 auto that I drive. The 88 4R has a fairly good 22RE 5spd and ok running gear but the body is toast. I just want to know how much of the harness and under dash stuff I will need if I decide to put the 22RE in either of my 3.0 trucks.
Clear enough? Not to be snotty but if you dont know what I am talking about you likely dont have anything valuable to add. Thanks.

My bad! Makes more sense when reading it that way.
Same sorta deal applies.
The harnesses, 88 (1st gen) to 89 aren't remotely compatible.
Good news is that the tach stuff may be OK, as some of the V6 tachs have pots that allow adjustment for number of cylinders.
The way I'd go on this:
1) Get a harness/ECU/injectors (it's important that they all match) from a 22RE truck of the same year. You don't want to mix and match the EFI from the 1988 and ECU from the 1989 (or other) unless you confirm that the injectors are the same resistance.
2) drivelines will swap, if you're pulling all of it out.. You could even use the 5sp from a 3.0L if you can find a 22RTE bellhousing, but that's a bit rare.
As you're swapping 22RE, I know a bit about making those little buggers run and have carved up several ECUs. I can probably tell you what you'd need and not need if you want to hack up the engine/ECU wiring harness.. Good luck with the swap!

Thanks. I am taking all of the wiring out of the 88 22RE. Will keep it all so it will be there when I need it. The ECU has some corrosion on cover but it was running ok when I started to take it apart. What kind of tweaking have you done with the 22RE ECU?

AFAIK - none of the EFI stuff will be compatible between the 22RE and the 3VZ.
My 1989 (gen1) 4Runner shows that the WIRE COLORS tend to be the same, but Im not sure if the harness plugs are the same etc.
If it were my project Id seperate out the EFI harness stuff from the non EFI stuff and wire them on seperate harness in the vehicle. This will make future engine swaps easier.
For 22RE tuning stuff - first get it to run stock. Then start tweaking.
IMHO the "Vf" is the secret to tuning the 22RE EFI (might also work on the 3VZ as well - I dont know those as well).
obvious issues are
- motor mounts
- tach
Is the 95 a Taco or still a torsion bar IFS?
If the 95 is a Taco, I think the 89 swap will be easier.
Also - are either the 89 or 95 auto or manual?
I think the 88 auto box interfaced with the EFI... making any auto/manual swapis um interesting
