1988 22re Flamethrower Injector Review

Like several other members here, I saw the post from Flamethrower asking for volunteers to try his injectors for free in exchange for a fair and honest review. Hard to not say yes to something like that.

My truck is a 1988 4Runner with the 22re engine, with somewhere around 183,000 miles and original injectors as far as I know. I've been meaning to send them out to get cleaned for years now, but other things always took priority. My normal MPG is around 17. I did have a road trip once that was all high way and I got 20, but that was a special case.

Here they are as I got them in a USPS flat rate box

The injectors look clean and come with new o-rings and cushions. They also come with an adapter to mate the non-Toyota injectors to our harnesses.

As Terrys87 noted in his review, the nozzle end of the Flamethrowers has a cup to it, whereas our Toyota OEM injectors are flat bottomed. Flamethrower suggests that his injectors better atomize the fuel, which should give better mileage and power.

I didn't take any pics during install, but here is a shot nearly finished. You can see the red wiring of the new injectors down in there.

The truck started right up. The first thing I noticed was higher idle. Even after the truck warmed up, it did not drop as low as it used to idle. I don't have a tach in the truck, but I could hear that it was abnormally high. After it warmed, I turned it down a bit. I'll set it with the tach in the next day or so, but for now it sounds about right. I'm guessing that these refreshed injectors flow better than my old ones giving me the higher idle. I have not driven the truck yet, I will be driving it this week and filling the tank to report on MPG, but my rev'ing of the engine in the garage tells me it is quick to rev, no hesitation. So far, I'm very happy. Even if I had paid for these injectors, the price of the Flamethrowers is not far from the price of a cleaning.

More to follow on the MPG as I drive the truck thru the week.

Drove the truck today, some quick thoughts that are fresh in my head...

First of all, I set the idle last night. Set it just under 800rpms. This truck would never idle smoothly under 1k before the injectors, so that is a plus.

Going around corners and in the parking lot at work I notice a big difference. The truck used to buck quite a bit at low speeds, now it does not, it just lugs through it instead of bucking and kicking and making me either hit the gas hard or press the clutch.

Most notable for me in 3rd gear, running around 45mph about to throw it in 4th gear, the engine just used to be out of power, screaming for me to switch gears, but the couple times I hit that spot on the drive to work, the engine seemed to have a little more juice.

Taking off from a dead stop sometimes the truck used to fall on its face if I didn't quite give it enough skinny pedal. Not anymore, seems like it has a little more oomph to get going now.

I filled up the tank this morning, so I'll be driving it all week and refill it again to see what kind of number I get.

So far, I'm thrilled. Yes I got these injectors for free, but like I have said before, the cost of cleaning my original injectors is right about the same cost as these replacements from Flamethrower, so if his offer had not come along for freebies, I'd be ordering a set from him anyway.

I was wondering about the 88s injectors as they are a standalone year. I see the extention that is on the 88s. You will find that your truck will idle or lug way down before dying. You are going to like them, and I am seeing a difference in the mileage already. Does your truck seem like you need to shift to higher gears faster? Mine revs faster and I dont need to stay in the lower gears as long. First and Second gears especially for my truck.

that alone shows an increase in horsepower right there likely from a better burn of the fuel going in

I have received about the same amount of gains as you guys. I to an highly satisfied. Last Monday I drove my truck for 500 straight miles from WV to NJ and now from NJ to Arkansas. Then from Arkansas to NJ then back home to WV.

I have had no problems at all. No hesitations and maintaining 5th gear on highways now. So yeah I'd recommend these to anyone

I will eventually get a set for my 88 and 85. Just like it was mentioned, for a little more cost of having your old injectors serviced, these are a big improvement. They are great.

these injectors come from flamethrower with new o-rings an body seals so no need to reuse them

(an its not recommended to move o-rings from one injector to a different one)

I put some of these in my 85 runner along with a brand new engine. I can't comment on the improvement since it's a new engine and I put these in right away, but I can say that it will cruise 80 on interstate just fine, idles perfect, has great throttle response, and has plenty of power. Starts up almost instantly every time too. By my calculations I'm getting at least 20 mpg.

Also 4 of these was half as much as a set of rebuilt injectors from NAPA, so that's a plus.

kelvinb...They come with everything you need. I got the one for the 86 model. The 88s have a different resistance so I am guessing the extention that came on corys used to offset the difference somehow. Flamethrower will have everything you will need.

the 1988 year had the same coil resistance (2-3 ohms) and the later denso style plug. you need an adapter harness to use the early low resistance injectors in the 88 trucks for both 22re and 3vze.

i understand that, what i was getting at was if your old o rings were cracked/brittle or broken. that may of been why yours was sputtering. either way it was a wise investment.

Thanks Flamethrower, the 88s are in their own. I appreciate the explanation.

Mileage Update: I put in 8.323 gallons of gas this morning and drove 147.8 miles since last week. That comes out to 17.76 MPG, nearly a 1 MPG improvement. I'm pretty happy with that, especially since I spent a fair amount of time idling in the driveway tweeking the idle and the AC idle up, etc. Also, this number is all city driving, ~14 miles each way to work all stop and go.

Also, after driving it for a week straight, I just want to say, the idle is so smooth I can't believe this is my truck. The engine used to have a bit of a shudder at idle, I would notice that my steering wheel and mirrors kind of vibrated. Now it's so smooth, that if I have the radio up louder than the engine, I don't even know it's running.

that would put your gains in city driving in the 5% range. i have found that the typical (as if there is such a thing) gains on the 84-88 22re are about 6%-7% so you are in the ballpark.

also, to test the low rpm gains, try skipping second on flat ground and see what happens.

A 12mm socket wrench mostly. I have a set to install soon and will give some details about how to pull the upper plenum and get to the injectors.
