1987 Pickup Cherokee Coil Spring

Over the weekend I finally decided to go ahead and do the Jeep Cherokee Mod, Similar to the "ZUK" mod. Grabbing information from fellow members, I used a 1995 Jeep Cherokee front coil springs to do this mod. It was more of a pain to remove the springs from the Jeep than it was to install it on the Toyota. This was from a Pic-A-Part Junk yard in Las Vegas, costed me only $10 for both springs.

Tools:
Basic tools
Spring compressor
Cut off wheel or saw for cutting the spring
Car lift or Jack and Jack stands

The springs are approx. 18" in height/length. Seen below.

Here's some pics of my truck before the springs go in. I have a 3" body lift from the previous owner, which one day I do want to remove and go to a susp. lift.

I also put a level gauge on the rear of the bed to see how much of a difference it made. It was pretty dead on level but the leave springs were pretty saggy as shown in these pics below.

DRIVER SIDE

PASSENGER SIDE

APPROX. 37" FROM THE GROUND TO THE FENDER WELL

Then I used a cut off wheel to cut the springs down to 14" just to see how much higher it would sit. You could always cut off material, but can't put it back on.

Now its sitting way too high, and pretty much maxing out the OEM suspension.

39" 11/16ths

Almost 3" inches in lift. I coult barely bolt on the shocks as it was maxing them out. So I removed them back off and cut another 2" off

After installed and settled down, you could still see the difference.

At 39", I may invest in getting longer shocks for the rears.

What, if anything, are you using to retain the springs to that location?

rokblok--- nothing is holding it in place but pressure. Even if you articulate it enough with this stock susp setup, the springs should pop out as the top portion is a pretty snug fit. you would need a pry bar to pry it down, then a spring compressor to pull the spring out of place.

So are you going to wheel this thing or are you using this for load bearing purposes? It seems like it would KILL your articulation but that's just speculation on my part. I'm not talking smack. It just seems like the spring rate designed to hold a (heavy) inline 4.0 or a jeep v8 (5.2 or something??) would be WAY too overkill for a toyota bed that two guys could carry 100 feet without breaking a sweat even if you cut them shorter.

I'd be interested in seeing how that thing flexes up.

luvmeye22re--- I wouldnt think this setup would let you flex as great as it was, this is just a bandaid repair for the sagging rear leaf springs. When money comes around, itll be SAS and different setup in the rear
