1986 Toyota 4wd project

Hi everyone, I just bought a 1986 toyota 4wd about a month ago, and have been doing all the maintenance stuff on it (like brakes, rebuilding the carburetor, fixing surface rust, etc). I picked it up for $1100, with 229k miles on it, and a very bad ground problem (lights and ignition would flicker/cut out every time I went over a bump on the freeway). The ground problem was caused by the battery tray completely rusting away (I think one of the batteries it had exploded, and then it sat for a long time, like 5 years). Overall though, it runs good (has a 1984 motor in it, unknown amount of miles).

I think it came from the bay area, as the 4wd parts looked like they had never been used, but every chip in the paint and plated part has some corrosion on it.

The 22R was available until the early 90`s, and then it was discontinued.

Its one of the last years of the carbed motors (87 was the last for 4wd and carburetor). It also has power nothing (not even steering). There are a few aesthetic things I am trying to decide whether I want to fix or not. It has a few dents on the top of the cab and the hood (like someone stood on it), and there is rust on the firewall from the clutch master cylinder taking a dump (it has oem aisin clutch master and slave replacements). It runs and drives great though. I just need to sort out a sticky choke (the choke on the secondary gets stuck half open). Its kind of a project, but I am sure it will be nice once I am done with it

wow I did not know that I own an 84 pickup ,4.88s ,3in ,sl ,32x11.50 bfg a/t s looking for an 85 efi 22re 4runner 5 speed to trade for.

Nice looking truck!

mike: the 22r was standard in pick-ups whereas EFI was an option until '88 (became standard in '89 4x4s). 2wds had the option of 22r until '92. both 4x4 and 2wd could be had with the 22r as a special order after that. '86+ 4runners were standard with EFI.

You could get a 22R up until the 2.7L came out.

I am thinking of getting front and rear off road bumpers, as one of the PO's cut the mounting brackets to the airdam, plus the front bumper is made of tin foil (I was going to do a stock restoration, but if I want a super clean one, I can get a 3rd gen truck). I am also planning on putting my Hella 550s with the Hella floods on it. I am basically building a skiing/snow vehicle as I live in the snow, and plan on going skiing this year (or possibly working at one of the resorts). I think it would be cool to get a locker, but it seems they all cost as much as I paid for the truck, so I will put up with the rear spinning.

Do all these trucks have super stiff springs in the rear? Mine will lift the right rear tire off the ground entering my driveway.

nah i dont think that the rear end of your truck should do that
I am thinking it might have 1 ton springs or something, as I have a feeling it was used at a winery in Sonoma.

Yesterday I pulled the exhaust manifold and alternator to get at a few things on it (like the grease formed all over the alternator, side of the block, and timing cover due to a leaky distributor o ring). I noticed one of the freeze plugs was leaking slightly (wasn't wet, but had the green coolant crust on it). It is a 1984 motor that was probably pulled from a junkyard, so I won't be sad to see it go, but at the same time, it runs ok, and doesn't smoke. Should I replace the freeze plug, or leave well enough alone until I get an 85+ long block for it?

The coolant is not necessarily coming from the freeze plug itself. I could have ran down the side of the motor from a leaky hose or head gasket, collected in the freeze plug and when the PO went to sell it, he just wiped the coolant off the side of the block, missing the FP.

NIce truck, looks like a good base to start with. Your truck could have 1 ton springs on it, I think that was an option.

I don't know if he touched the engine (it looked very crusty compared to the rest of the truck). I will probably get an 85+ engine for it, as the one in it has a questionable past (It was probably abused in the vehicle it came from).

I haven't seen another I can compare the springs to. I will post a picture of them later. I have a 2wd 1 ton cab chassis, but I think the springs would be different considering its 2wd.
