1986 Pickup detent/kickdown cable - will 88 fit?

Hi. Sorry for the newb question, but I have a 1986 Toyota Pickup, automatic, with the 22RE engine. It needs a new detent cable, but it seems that part isn't made anymore and none of the aftermarket ones indicate that they would fit. I do see plenty that say they fit a 1988-1995 Toyota Pickup. Will one of those fit? They're 49.6" long, if that helps.

That's a tough question, as the kickdown cables changed at some points, I believe, and not many people replace them, ever.

How hard would it be to fix the old one? It's basically not much different than a bike shifter cable, which when the housing splits, can be repaired a bit with rebuilding the spots where it split. It doesn't need to work perfectly to work well.

The kickdown cable on my '93 pickup is splitting near the throttle body, so I put some thin grease in it and wrapped the cable with some tape to hold it together. It can still pop out of the end cap if the cable is moved too much when working on the engine, but it goes right back in. It's been like that for over 100K miles. I also put a big note on the cable that says "Don't touch this cable!". LOL

Thanks for responding! I'm more of an RV tech guy than an automotive guy, so I'm way of out of my element here. The problem I'm having is that it's leaking really badly where it connects to the transmission. The cable itself is ok in that everything shifts as it should and such, but I took it to a local transmission shop and they said that the part of the cable where it connects is deteriorated to the point where even just changing the grommet out won't help. They said it would be easier/better to just get a whole new cable assembly. Maybe they're just taking me for a ride, but the quote on the labor didn't seem ridiculously high (and they don't have the part so they're not making any money there) so I'm not sure?

Nice find. Hopefully it is long enough, as some reviews have said it is too short, but those appear to be based on people with the 3.0 engine and not the 2.4.

Did you install it yet? Let us know if it worked out. I might be tempted to swap my detent kickdown cable before mine goes out completely.

Yep, it's installed and fits fine. Same length as the original. One caveat - this is on an '86 Sunrader, which is basically an '86 pickup with the 2.4 and an A43D transmission. It's possible there are some differences I don't know about between the pickups used for the Sunraders and the regular pickups.
