1986 4x4 VS 1989 4x4
I've been searching to restore a 1985-86 Toyota Xtra Cab 4x4 in hopes to make a replica Back to the Future truck. KC fog lights and smitty built bumpers are a must. haha.
I've researched a bit on IFS vs Solid Front Axel, Engine options, body style differences etc. I'm not into rock crawling but light offroading is probable. So the '86 was the ideal choice to scour ebay/craigslists over the months. The purist in me will only accept an 1986 22RE XtraCab as was in the movie.
Of course I have searched for other years ie 87-89 to see what the market has. The market for a specific truck like this in Los Angeles is proving a bit more difficult than I thought.
Long story short, I'm seeing a 1989 22RE XtraCab next week and I'd love to know more about the differences from 1986 vs 1989 models. I've read a little bit on wider wheel base and rear ABS for the '89 but I'd love some input and thoughts.
I love the '86 body style but the option for a v6 engine swap with the '89 has me questioning if making a replica truck out of the '89 isn't a bad idea.
Would the parts to make the replica be the same for the '86 as the '89? Is one year better than the other IYO? Do the body styles differ THAT much?
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

It is my understanding a 86 22re is rare. Most are 22r engines. Your just talking the engine with the 22re vs 22r. Body style and interior is big difference. The 86 looks clunky and the 89 refined. have fun with either way.
