1986 4runner wont go over 55mph...help

never posted anything before but have found lots of helpfull advise on here so my problem is this. traded my f150 for a 1986 4runner cause i missed havin a yota. the 4runner is lifted...im guessing around 4 inches, it has a 22re efi, 5 speed manual tranny, 4 wheel drive, and 33x10.50x15, cold air intake, and header from what i can see. the problem is the yota wont go over 55mph. it runs great, no rough idle no missing, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd seems completly normal for a lifted yota. 4th and 5th are just lacking...it seems like it just looses power...but still runs fine. my first thought was gearing...i really dont wanna pull the third member...i jacked the rear end up and spun the tire...a full rotation of the tire = two complte rotations of the drive shaft. one other problem is the brake pedal is very hard to push like old maual brakes. bad booster...vaccum leak...im not sure...just would like some input on what might be my problem.

not another one of these won't go past XXX mph on the highway threads. that's like at least two in the past week or so.

did you bother searching first before posting and reading what other have done or recommended in the same case?

what have you tried so far?

Toyota has never ever made a 2:1 rear end gear ratio in a truck/4runner.

a single rotation of only ONE rear tire (the other tire is staying stationary) would show as 2:1 if there's 4:10's in the rear, correct? spin BOTH tires a full single rotation, and the DS will make 4 turns

yup,

So, assuming you've got an axle up in the air with the driveshaft disconnected (or trans in N) & neither wheel on the ground:
  • If you turn one tire & the other one either stays still while the pinion (driveshaft if in trans is in N) rotates, or the other one rotates backward while the pinion stays still, or something in between, then you've got an open diff or a very weak LSD (like a Trac-Lok with too many miles on it). In this case, you need to secure one wheel (perhaps by lowering the tire onto the ground), then you can figure your gear ratio by rotating the airborne tire TWO full rotations and counting the number of times the pinion rotates. 4.10 turns means 4.10 gears. If you only rotate the tire once, then 2.05 turns means 4.10 gears.

thankyou iamsuperbleeder! spun both tires at the same time and the driveshaft spun 4.75 times...so im guessing 475 gears? this would cause the truck to top out at a lower mph...correct????

4.10 (with manual trans) 4.30 (auto trans) are factory ratios for your 86.

other options if changed would be 4.56, 4.88 and 5.29

but with 4.10's or 4.30 factory gears it would certainly slow you down with 33's but I can hit 90+ MPH on a flat highway with my carb'd motor and 31's with factory 4.10's in 5th gear. If I drop down to 4th while up hill I have no problem maintaining 70-80mph.
