1986 22RE Project

First time poster and want to thank you all for your help in advance.

I just acquired a 1986 Manual 4Runner with the 22RE engine. The engine is only hitting on two cylinders and miles are unknown on the engine. Rust is very minimal, superficial only around the wheel wells and paint is very oxidized.

Purpose of this build will be a local scoot around, sort of mad max style, and of road during hog hunts. Dont really want larger than 31's on it.

My plan is to keep as much of the driveline stock with the exception of a new long block. My biggest question with the long block setups is whether there is enough difference in the yotashop KB lb v the 22RE Performance 2.5 to warrant the extra coin. I do not mind spending but like to get the most bang for the buck like most people.

I am also open to suggestions since I do not have any experience with these type of builds. I have been spinning wrenches for years building supras and muscle cars, the off road world is new to me and am willing to take sound and logical (maybe even illogical lol) advice. TIA
