Stay with the efi the Japanese carbs suck. Never found anyone who could rebuild one, and if you in the states smog would be a pain with a carb aftermarket carbs were ok but once you get on a hill you know why efi is better

Look for a deisel 2L-T engine (2.4 L). You can always mate it with an auto trans from 3L (2.8L) one. However, it's extremely hard to find that kind of engine here in the States. Mostly they come as 2L-TE (turbo/EFI) with auto trans from Hilux Surf (LN 130, 2nd gen.) I've seen the latter floating around eBay lately for about $3K.
Good luck!

Fuel cut off solenoid and some sort of unit on the passenger side kick panel that houses microchips. Looks like an emissions computer. You know, useless smog crap.
I would "deal" with the EFI truck (22RE). The fuel injection setup is SO basic. Don't let the letters "EFI" intimidate you with complicated diagrams and computer software and all that jazz. Compared to what automakers are putting out today, the 22RE fuel injection is damn near caveman technology.
The 3.slow V6 is a little more intimidating, but they have OBD hand-held units that you can purchase for roughly 200-300 bucks. You plug it into the diagnostic port under the hood of your Toyota and it spits out code for whatever is wrong with the motor.
You look up the code in the corresponding reading material your OBD diagnostic tool came with and it describes the part needing servicing or replacing.
So, if you consider that option, its easier than "symptom searching". I will be converting my 22R to fuel injection in the next few months (saving cash). And I will be doing all of it out of recycled parts (minus air filter & perhaps new fuel injectors... perhaps).
22R from the factory: 96hp
22RE from the factory: ~116hp (according to the old yota commercials on youtube)
3.0 V6: not worth the extra weight
