Weber or OEM?

The carb on my 85 is crapped out so I need to replace it with another one. I want to go new and i've gathered so far that the webers are better than an oem replacement. How much better? Where's the best place to buy a Weber online and which one should I get?
Thanks,
Halvor

weber

I just bought a weber 34/34 for 299 and free shipping. comes with everything you need to install on your truck. I got it from racetep.com call these guys and talk to them they will help you with everything you need. I hate the factory carbs and all the hoses running every which way.

^TEP is a great source!
also try http://www.webercarbsdirect.com/

for perf the 38dges (or the 34/34) would be better, the 32/36dg is also a good choice.
in AK id want the elect choke.

I do not have much experience with the stock carb. When I bought my 84 it had the stock carb on it, which crapped out on me in about 45 days. Since the exact history of the car was a mystery to me I decided to replace with the Weber 38 dges. Compared to how it was running, the increase was significant. I was only able to go uphill at about 45-50 mph before, now I can get over the hills at 65. Top speed for me increased to 80 mph range. If you decide to go with the weber carb, you might want to check LC Engineering for this spiral weber adapter kit. They want $80 for it, but they claim a 5hp/ 6ft.-lbs of torgue gain. Could be worth it. I have plans to order one myself.

Yeah, I just want something that's street legal to replace and outperform the stock setup. I'll see about calling some of those places today, that you guys listed.

When I bought my 84 it ran really really bad. Super rich + slight miss at idle, no fast idle, etc etc. Used over 40L/100k (which is about 11gal/60miles or 6mpg). I was embarrassed to be seen in it.

All I did was spray down the choke linkage (several times over a couple days) to get the fast-idle cam to free up (it was stuck) to get my fast idle back.

Then I took the top off the carburetor (5x philips screws) and saw that there was debris in the bottom of the float bowl. I jammed a rag down the bowl to sop up the gas and the debris, then used compressed air to blow through all of the passages, and soaked it all with carb cleaner. I used a whole can. If you're blowing compressed air around, wear safety glasses.

After putting it back together, it runs fine. I didn't even change the top gasket. Nor did I drill out the idle mixture screw.

I also went to a bike shop and get a small clear $2 fuel filter to put between the fuel pump and the carburetor.

Bottom line, your carb might need a bit of service and TLC, but may not require replacement just yet.

Recently purchased a 85 yota with a 22r. It struggles on dead stop mound climbing and am considering getting a weber progressive downdraft conversion kit in hopes of getting more low end torque and power.
Comments and/or recommendations?

I saw that on LCE's website too. It seems like an attractive option to replace my 2-piece adapter with that constantly leaks and needs new gaskets every few months. The principal of the spiraling seems sound too, as it spins the air/fuel mix, better atomizing it (unlike the tornado/turbonator/etc products for EFI engines that just spin air alone). $80 is a bit steep, but if you get one definately do a write-up on what you think of it as I would really like to see what kind of hp/mpg gains it gives.

hey scooby, yeah i dont have the bootlet. bought the truck with the webber already installed and a yoda dude looked at it, said it was hooked up wrong, then lost contact with him. so i need something to look at and see how it should be, and what hoses need to be blocked off. i have a bunch of hoses that are just hanging there that the previous owner said was hooked to the oem carb. thats all i know.

The only hose you should need is the one that goes from the carb to the vacuum advance on the distributor (if equipped)

ok. so do all of the other hoses have to be blocked off or can they just dangle there? theres currently 3 or 4 hoses(cant remember) that are hooked up atm.

it runs really rich, is completely gutless, and is a bitch to start. i have the 32/36 webber.
