Which way does the VTV go??

So I recently discovered that my 22RE didn't have the VTV anymore (it had the hose for it coming from the dashpot, but no VTV....

I ordered an OEM one from Toyotapartszone and it came today. There is a red side and a black side. If I blow into the black side, air goes through. If I blow into the red side, it barely does.

I installed the VTV with the red side toward the hose/manifold, and the red side attached to the filter, which would allow air to easily be sucked INTO the manifold.

Is this the proper way to mount it? The FSM, amazingly, does not specify, and I don't know that much about EFI to know what it should be doing....please help

Thanks!

PS - what "bad" things come of not having a VTV? Far as I know, I've never had it and put 60,000+ miles on the engine since I got it....

The red side goes towards the throttle body, the black side has the filter thingy on it.

Thanks! That's how i had it set up.

What is the "bad" side of either not having it on or having it on backward?
