The valve noise that won't GO AWAY!

ok my sig has the info about my truck. Here's the thing, My motor was starting to make quite a bit of valve noise for no reason, it just happened. So I adjusted the exhaust valves(didn't have a small enough feeler gauge for the intake side) and it helped but it was still louder than usual. So I got the right feeler gauge the other day and adjusted them all over again. When I was done it was so loud that I didn't even want it to run if it didn't have to. So I took it to my college class and had the instructor help me adjust them again(he was a technician for at least 25 years before he started teaching) and we started it up and it was a little better but still sounded like crap. My motor used to be so quiet that you almost couldn't hear it running at idle. Does anybody have any idea what my problem could be?

what else does it do? Does the noise go away when you rev. It when was the last time you changed the timing chain. How is your oil pressure ? Has your ignition timing moved?

The noise speeds up as you rev the motor. The timing chain was changed by the previous owner(he gave me receipts for everything that has been done to the truck) at around 210,000 miles(there are 255,000 miles on the truck now. My oil pressure meets factory service manual spec when I run it with 10w - 40. Also, no, my ign. timing is exactly where it's supposed to be.

I don't think that an injector can make this much noise, because it's more of a metal on metal tapping sound. Either that or it's a really faint knock? But it isn't deep like a rod knock. when I checked compression not too long ago it registered at 140 psi with no leaks in all cylinders, not great but at least it wasn't leaking.

have you tried backing off the valve cover nuts after you adjusted the valves? If your gasket is old it is easy to over snug them. IT cause the valve train noise to amplify.

well I did reseal the valve cover no to long ago but maybe I over tightened it after the adjustment. I'll try to loosen them when I get off of work

worn rocker shafts
you'll never be able to adjust the noise out once the rocker shafts start wearing out

well loosening the valve cover bolts fixed the majority of the problem. But I agree the rest is probably coming from the rocker arm shafts. I found out that my motor finally started burning oil. So I'm going to start running 10W 40 again. But 256,000 miles isn't bad for just starting to burn 10W 30 oil though
