First off I have a 85 pickup with a 22r carb, 5 speed.
I'm not really familuar with a carb. I've cleaned them on weedeaters and chain saws but not on cars or trucks.
my problem is:
When I try to get my truck to start when it is cold, it is really hard to start. Some time i have to get out and pour some gas in the carb. I have been chasing this problem for quite a while. I first thought it was something wrong with the gas line going to the carb, letting the gas drain boack to the tank, But I have researched and found, the fuel pump is under the hood and I dont see it before and after the fuel pump. Next I thought there was no gas in the carb. I researched and foind that my model has a window on the carb so you can see if there is gas in teh carb. I cleaned the window and I can see gas setting in the carb. (I'm not sure that just becouse it is setting there it is going to shere it is suposed to be though). The problem could be the floats. or the jets (???) or maybe the electric choke (I'm pretty sure the choke is working though).

I'm needing to know what everyones opinion on what I should do is. I've thought about a electric choke, rebuilding the carb (which I dont really want to do unless necessary), and I'm going to check the lines, though I dont think that is the problem... Any other solutions would be appreciated. And thanks for you help ahead of time.

 

new fuel filter? most carbs you gotta pump the gas 3-4 times before you start cold. Does it start okay when warmed up?

 

If you will look on the left(passenger) side of the carb. you will notice that when you press the gas all the way there is a plunger that is depressed that shoots a small spray of gas into the carb. for cold starts. If this part gets worn and does not spray, youll nearly drain the battery before it will crank. I replaced mine for about 5 bucks and it works great now.
Let us know what you find. Thats how we all learn.

 

Also, it only takes one pump of the gas to get my carbed truck to fire up. You're basically just setting the choke.

 

Aalan, I'm not sure what "plunger" you are talking about?? is it towards the front of the carb or the rear??? what you are saying about almost draining your batt before it starts is exactly how my truck is.

 

He means you'll crank it so much that it'll drain the battery.

I'd do a few things to trouble shoot this. First off does it start well once it is started and warm once? For example if you were to start it an hour after you just drove it around.

You can pull the fuel filter and check that too (just blow through it and there should be little resistance in the way the flow is suppose to go). An alternate to that is to setup a fuel pressure gauge between the pump and carb to see what you are reading. Fuel filter is only a few bucks and might take 15 minutes to install.

The electric choke can also be checked. Turn the ign to accessory (on), but don't crank it. See what voltage you are getting to the electric choke. It should be 12v. Anything much less than that and it's not going to work too well. Mine was at 3v when I tested that wire. I didn't hook up a different wire because I ended up putting a weber 32/36 in so it fixed all my problems.

Also you can try and use carb cleaner and spray it on all the linkages etc... and this may help. You can also do an resistance check on the choke to (i'm not sure what the reading should be, but it's in the manual) There's a few things that ought to keep ya busy.

 

Any chance the problem could have been vapor lock????? My nephew (he used to own the truck) came over and took a look at it and undid a screw, had me to crank it, and then it crunk right up. I havent had a problem with it since. It did run out of gas in my driveway but I didnt try to drive it so i didnt think there would be a problem with "vapor lock" but maybe I was wrong???

 

Doubt it's vapor lock. What screw did he undo?

 

I'm not exactly what it is called.... It is on the driver's side of the carb. I belive it was a 13 mm
