Transfer case removal.

I need to rebuild my transfer case on my 84 2L pickup. The service manual says I need to remove the transmission and transfer case as one unit. I'm wondering if I really need to or can I split the tranny and transfer case in place. I've been searcher around on the internet and I can seem to find a positive answer one way or the other. Thanks,

If it's an automatic the transfer case is integrated to the transmission

if it's a manual transmission
pull the selector out through the top
remove speedo cable
remove both drive shafts from the outputs
undo the 6 bolts going from t/c to transmission and slide the t/c out and down

you will wanna have a strap or some other means to support the transmission or you will put strain on your motor mounts
