Red face TIres vs. 22re

I am building an 85 4runner with 22re (rebuild, bored, torque cam, header), w56, stock 4.10s, dual 2.28 cases and 33s. The local shop quoted $700 labor for one regeared diff. How would running stock gears for a while hurt my on road manners, the dual cases should take care of off road? Can anyone on the VA-Richmond area suggest a shop to do the diffs? Also I don't mind buying the tools if there are any good step by steps out there that someone has a link to (ex navy helo mechanic) do it myself? Any help appreciated.

$700 is pretty high for one diff, and you will need to regear both. Try Zuk: http://gearinstalls.com/

Just drive it. If i can still pull 4th gear in the flats running 38.5" boggers, 4.10's and a stock 265K mile 22re, i think you will be ok.

That just seems to defy logic...I need to stop reading this - you people are going to make me put 33's on next with just 4.10s for my DD. Then cheap 4.7's to make it twice the rig on the trails...

Being poor sucks

IMO it's gonna be a dog on the road with 4.10s and 33s. I have 31s and had 4.10s and it was slow and bogged on takeoff. An idea is you can do like I did and find a wreck with better gears. I found one with 4.56s and just swapped out the 3rd and front diff (well, haven't swapped the front yet but this weekend). I think with the SFA you can use any 8" 3rd (could be wrong). But if you found some 4.88 diffs you'd be set.

Another thing is with all the write ups it shouldn't be too hard to set up some gears, especially if you were a heli mechanic. I'd be willing to help if you want as I have seen it done but have yet to fully set one up myself.

As far as shops around here, I'll have to think on that one. I do know it should be alot less than $700 and it would help with the price if you pulled the 3rd members (really easy) and took them in like that.

Shoot me a PM man as I'm always wrenching on my truck over here and alot of the guys in the club I wheel with come over to fix their stuff too. Also, where do you wheel at? I have yet to wheel with a Toyota .

It does defy logic......thats a great way to ruin a clutch or torque converter.

I grenaded my rear end a few years ago, long story really NOT my fault, and used a friends 4.10's for a few weeks while i got it fixed. 1st gear on steep slopes was the worst.. other than that it was a little slower, but each gear held much longer... I did one drive into a headwind where 4th wasnt an option so I put it in 3rd and hit cruise at 4500rpm, 55mph and away I went.... It will be slower but if its just a trail rig drive it for a while and see...

eurica! (I think)

Buddy that I used to live with is all in the Drag scene and he pulled a favor with another buddy that'll do it for $180 a 3rd, as long as I get everything. Do most of the combo kits come with lockers or no. Moving to the great white north in about as soon as I get the truck done so don't want a full time locker. Thanks for your input fellas.

I hate not having gears and i can tell its taking a toll on my truck.I would honetly say you have made the right choice. My 4runner will get gears before i even fire it for the rirst time so i can brake it all in at once. check out 4crawlers site for gear brake in. lots of other great info on that site!!
