Timing issue, I am stumped. ESA?

Had issues with my electronic spark advance on my 85 22re. Messed with it for a few days and couldn't figure it out. Took it to my mechanic to see what he could find out.

Cam timing was off by 2 teeth so he adjusted to be aligned properly and checked and adjusted the timing to 5 degrees btdc. Unjumped the diagnostic plug and it advanced just fine. Once you accelerate it does not advance anymore.

He is convinced it is either the ECU or the Distributor that is bad. I was also thinking the computer may not be getting the right signals from sensors to make the right computations to advance the timing. Not sure how advanced of a efi system these 22re's have.

Anyone have any experience with the Toyota ESA? The toyota service manual did not give too much information to assist in troubleshooting.

Thanks a bunch in advance,
Jake

I had a bad TPS Throttle Pos Sensor and I had trouble with the timing, it looked like 30 BTDC. When I put a good TPS the problem disappeared. 85 22re

So test the tps...
