Can anyone tell me what all I need to remove to get the timing chain cover off of a 84 22r. It has grooves in it and it is leaking. Also what all should I replace when I have it off? Can I get those parts at a local autoparts store?

 

Replace the Water pump, oil pump, and timming chain.

Well do I have to pull the head and the oil pan like the manual states?

 

no you should only pull the oil pan.... just be carefull with the head gasket when you put the cover back on, it can bind on th etop of the cover....

use gasket sealer to hold the timing chain cover's gaskets on each side of the cover. im not talking about the silicon permatex in a tube but teh stuff you brush on the gasket to help it stick in place... i think its called gasket cement or something. after you get the gasket on the timing cover use gray permatex on the back side of the gasket that goes to the block... dont use too much tho.

dont over torque the tensioner bolts or any of the timing cober bolts. use grease to hole the oil pump o ring in place while you put the oil pump on, and be sure that the o ring doesnt come out of the groove or it will spray oil everywhere...

i don't recommend using any kind of RTV on gaskets any more. i've been using the permatex "high tack" gasket sealer in the can and it seems to work very well on all types of gaskets. if RTV gets loose into an oil passage it can starve a bearing to death and fry your engine.

 

The head can stay on, but there is still a bolt through the head that holds the cover on.

You may want to give LC Engineering a call, about their dual row timming chain conversion, it has metal rails, that wont let the chain rub against the cover after they are worn out

 

So I have the crossmember unbolted and out of the way but the pan will not come out. What else do I have to remove to get the pan all the way out?
