Steering Gearbox... $1409.78

So went to the stealership, having officially declared them that term, they say my gearbox on my 84 toyota pickup is going out, causing my bump in the wheel feeling when im trying to turn. My question is, can i go another route other then a junkyard piece?

Is there a rebuild kit? should i look into hy-steer?

Just looking for options cause i Refuse to spend almost 1500 bucks on a little gear box ...

Thanks

P.S. Part number is 45310-35111

You can buy these used all day long online for under $100. Folks doing high steer throw them away. I've thrown away dozens.

Doubt it is the steering box, likely something worn out in the linkage. Check the rubber rag joint and u-joints at the ends of the steering shaft, and the play in the drag link and then the tie rod ends and knuckle bearings in the axle.

See if you can duplicate the "bump" with the front tires in the air, turning back and forth. If not, see if on the ground works. Then poke around underneath and follow the linkage motion and see where you get motion on one part and no motion on the next part of the linkage. That would be a likely source of the play.

well that rubber link between the shaft and the gear box is worn out, that part its around 350 bucks from the dealership but he says its most likely the gear box thats worn

I keep getting the feeling that you want it to be the steering box because the dealership says it is. I hope you can see through their sales pitch...

Least helpful post ever.

You think the dealer is just making it up so they can sell a $1400 steering box? You think the dealer is so Naive they would actually believe someone would pay $1400 for a steering box?

And yes, I do think the dealer thinks people are that naive to pay $1400 for a steering box. Happens everyday. Parts guys and service writers at dealerships work off commission! It's like fishing...all you need is one to bite!

Plus he said the rubber link in his steering is bad, but the dealer keeps insisting it's the steering box?

I stand by my comment that it's a sales pitch.

I think it might have more to do that mechanics work at dealerships, not technicians. Mechanics do not diagnose vehicles, they keep replacing parts until the problems fixed.

I check prices at the dealership on parts all the time. But a lot of stuff they have priced way to high, so parts store it is.

rebuilt steering box is under 400 at a parts store. And the rag joint, under 20.

I know a handful of what you call "mechanics that work at dealerships" who would take serious offense to that statement. You may have had bad luck in the past, but a good dealership tech can and regularly does diagnose vehicles.
